Clarion University's chemistry programs are oriented toward students seeking a B.S. degree in chemistry. Our programs provide students with a rigorous preparation in the fields of chemistry and biochemistry in a setting that emphasizes knowledge of current developments and hands-on experience with modern instrumentation. A B.S. in chemistry opens the door to a wide range of career pathways in industry, government, academia, health care, and business. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.
B.S. Chemistry: Biochemistry Concentration
Biochemistry is the study of chemical and molecular components that drive biological processes. Biochemists use an integrated approach that combines multiple disciplines of chemistry, biology, physics and math to describe and explain protein structure/function, nucleic acid chemistry, biophysics, enzymology, metabolism and overall cellular and organismal function. Discoveries in biochemistry have revolutionized the fields of medicine and have transformed the study of numerous disease states during the past decades. The Clarion University biochemistry curriculum provides a strong foundation for students preparing for graduate studies in biochemical sciences and professional careers in biochemical and pharmaceutical industries. The program also provides a rigorous base for allied health studies such as medical school, dental school, and pharmacy. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.
B.S. Chemistry: Cooperative Engineering Concentration
The Clarion University chemistry curriculum provides a strong foundation for further studies at the graduate level or at the graduate level or a career in the chemical industry. The program provides a rigorous introduction to the fields of chemistry and biochemistry. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.
B.S. Chemistry: Geochemistry Concentration
The geochemistry concentration provides an exciting opportunity for students to supplement their expertise in the field of chemistry though additional coursework in geology. This coursework will provide knowledge and skills in the geologic composition, structure, and processes of the Earth. Employment of students with these skills is expected to grow in response to demand from petrochemical and environmental industries. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.
Minor in Chemistry
Chemistry is the study of the properties and behavior of matter, which provides an important understanding of our world and how it works. A minor in chemistry requires 19-20 credits of chemistry coursework. This program is offered only at the Clarion campus.
