STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS AND ACTIVITIES

PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

  • American Library Association

Description: The ALA is the biggest library association in the world. It offers a number of different types of memberships. Students may check out the student membership here and Joint student Membership program here.

  • American Library Association (ALA) Student Chapter

Description: The ALA Student Chapter at Clarion University is a place for undergraduate and graduate students to discuss issues relating to the library field. Whether you need help with your classes or you're just looking for a community to join, we have it all.

How to join: Find us on CUConnect and request to join.

  • Pennsylvania Library Association

Description: The PaLA are advocates for libraries all over Pennsylvania, including academic, public, special and school. They provide a chance for members to network and offer professional development. The PaLA also supports education by providing scholarships and grants for MILS and continuing education.

How to join: Visit the Pennsylvania Library Association to register and join. Membership fee applies and is $30 a year and you must be a full-time students taking a minimum of 12 credits per semester.

Library school students are eligible to join both ALA and the Pennsylvania Library Association at one low price of $42.00 a year. The form is available here.

  • Association for Information Science and Technology

Description: ASIST brings the practice of information science together with information science research. They work to improve access to information by providing theories, techniques, and technologies.

How to join: Visit the ASIST website to register and join. Student membership is $45 per year and is open to both full and part time students.

  • Society of American Archivists 

Description: The SAA promotes the value and diversity of archives and archivists and serves as the preeminent resource for the profession. Membership includes a semi-annual periodical and a bimonthly magazine. A mentor program is available for student members.

How to join: Visit the Society of American Archivists to register and join. Student membership is $55 per year.

  • Beta Phi Mu (The International Library and Information Studies Honor Society)

Description: Beta Phi Mu is an invitation only library honor society for library science students that attend an ALA accredited college or university. Membership includes opportunities for publishing, leadership at chapter and national level and discounts on certain continuing education and on Beta Phi Mu publications.

How to join: Must be nominated by a faculty member.

  • Special Libraries Association 

Description: SLA is a worldwide organization with a focus on those that work in specialized libraries. They offer certification programs, professional development and an annual conference for networking.

How to join: Student membership is $10 and students must be enrolled in a minimum of two courses per semester. Visit the Special Libraries Association to join.
