Kiski, Elk Catholic win mathematics competition

November 20, 2009
Kiski High School and Elk County Catholic High School took home the first place trophies in the 25th Annual Clarion University High School Mathematics Competition.

For Kiski, the win was a continuation of its dominance of this century in the AA/AAA competition. It was Kiski's fifth victory since 2003, with the most recent being in 2006. Titusville was the runner-up with defending AA/AAA champion St. Marys, third; Punxsutawney, fourth; and Warren, fifth.

Elk County Catholic kept one of the two trophies, this one in the A competition, in St. Marys with their win. Elk Catholic had previously won in 1998 and 2007. Clarion, the defending champions, were second, followed by Venango Catholic, Karns City, and Brockway.

Kelly Kuzemchak of Kiski achieved the top individual score in the AA/AAA category for a second consecutive year. Alex Furlan of Titusville was second, followed by Amanda Atkins of Marion Center, Raj Thaker of St. Marys, and Alex Mozga of Kiski. Thaker was also a top five finisher in last year's competition.

Tyler Healy of Elk County Catholic was the individual high scorer in A. He was followed by Dale Barnhart of Karns City, Jake Smith of Venango Catholic, Bill Warren of Clarion, and Ken Vinton of Jeff Tech. Healy, Warren, and Smith, also finished in the top five scorers last year.

The top five teams and top five individual scorers receive a trophy during an awards ceremony conducted by Dr. Ben Freed, professor of mathematics.

In the competition, teams of up to 10 participants take a 45-question mathematics test. The team scores are determined by adding the total of the top five scorers for each team. The top scorer on each team receives a mathematics magazine.

Twenty-six schools and 243 students participated in Clarion University's oldest academic competition, which is sponsored by the department of mathematics.
