14th Induction Banquet - May 3, 2002

CLARION SPORTS HALL OF FAME INDUCTS SIX NEW MEMBERS
PRESIDENT REINHARD, M.C. DAVE KATIS & AL JACKS WELCOME GUESTS

The 14th Annual Clarion University Sports Hall of Fame inducted six new members on Friday, May 3rd, bringing the total number of inductees to 89.

The new inductees were five former athletes and a former coach including James A. Becker (football), Charles E. Coryea (wrestling), Carlita A. Jones (women’s basketball), Joseph M. Malis (men’s basketball), Theresa A. (Teri) Peot (women’s swimming) and Gene Sobolewski (Football Coach).

Following a reception at Moore Hall from 5:30pm - 6:30pm, Sports Hall of Fame President Al Jacks introduced the new inductees and welcomed the over 300 guests at Chandler Dining Hall.

Clarion President Dr. Diane Reinhard also welcomed the new inductees and guests, while also congratulating the current athletic teams on their successes on the fields and in the classroom.

Following dinner Master of Ceremonies Dave Katis presented each of the inductees after giving a brief biography of their careers.

After the inductees were finished, Athletic Director Bob Carlson announced the Male and Female “Athletes of the Year” as voted on by the head coaches. The 2002 Male Athlete is diver Shawn Colten, and the Female Athlete is diver Amanda Earnest.

CLARION NOTES: The 2002 induction class brings the Hall of Fame total to 89...The first class in 1989 had 11 members. That inaugural class included -James Alcorn (Football), Dr.James Gemmell (former President), Al Jacks (Football Coach), Alex Sandusky (Football), Barbara Schaefer-Nejman (Diving), Wade Schalles (Wrestling), William Sheridan (Football), Waldo S. Tippin (Coach - Athletic Director), Pete Vuckovich (Baseball), Jon Wiberg (Basketball) and Ernestine Weaver (Gymnastics Coach).

 

JAMES A. BECKER - Football  - Complete Bio
  • 1969 Clarion University Grad - Secondary Ed - English 
  • Position: Wide Receiver (1966-68) 
  • Led Clarion to 1st PSAC Title in 1966 (10-0 Record) 
  • Clarion Won PSAC-West Titles In 1966 and 1967 
  • Clarion Was PSAC Runner-up in 1967 (8-2) 
  • Golden Eagles were 24-5 during his 3 seasons
  • 1966 Stats: 28 Catches, 411 Yards, 9 td's 
  • 1967 Stats: 54 Catches, 520 Yards, 5 td's
