Venango Cultural Events

Venango Campus Activities Board (CAB) is pleased to present the 2017-2018 Cultural Arts Series.  As the programming board for Venango campus, CAB works cooperatively with other campus and community entities to provide arts events that represent a wide array of cultures, experiences, and viewpoints.  This diversity enhances the quality of life on campus and in the community, stimulates dialogue and reflection, and supports the academic mission of Clarion University and Venango campus.   All of the arts series is free and open to the community. 

Spring 2018   Independent Film Series

The Venango Campus Independent Film Series is free and open to the public.  The series will feature films from independent filmmakers from Wales and the United States.  All films will be shown in the Robert W. Rhoades Center Auditorium. For questions regarding the series or any of the films, please contact Emily Aubele at 676-6591, ext. 1269.

March 24                               The Hollars                                                                         PG-13

A struggling NYC artist is forced to return to the small, middle-American town he left behind after learning about his mother's illness. Back in the house he grew up in, he is immediately swept up in the problems of his dysfunctional family, high school rival and an over-eager ex-girlfriend as he faces impending fatherhood with his NYC girlfriend. John Krasinski's second feature as a director is a poignant look at the bonds of family and friendship.

Set in Wales, DARK HORSE is the inspirational true story of a group of friends who decide to take on the elite 'sport of kings' and breed themselves a racehorse. Raised on a slagheap allotment, their foal grows into an unlikely champion, beating the finest thoroughbreds in the land, before suffering a near fatal accident. Nursed back to health by the love of his owners, he makes a remarkable recovery, returning to the track for a heart-stopping comeback.

In the near future, a time of artificial intelligence, 86-year-old Marjorie — a jumble of disparate, fading memories — has a handsome new companion who looks like her deceased husband and is programmed to feed the story of her life back to her. What would we remember, and what would we forget, if given the chance? MARJORIE PRIME is based on Award nominated play, exploring memory, identity, love and loss.

Maud, a bright-eyed, intelligent woman, hunched and with hands disabled by arthritis, yearns to be independent from her overly protective family. She answers an advertisement for a housekeeper by a 40-year-old bachelor, Everett, who owes nothing to anyone. She is a terrible housekeeper and spends most of her time painting. But over time, she wins his heart. When they realize people will actually buy her cards and paintings, he supports and encourages her. Maud's determination for her art, along with her partnership with Everett, blossoms into a career as a famous folk artist.

Soon after arriving to teach at a small town college, Abe Lucas gets involved with two women, Rita Richards (, a lonely professor who wants him to rescue her from her unhappy marriage; and Jill Pollard his best student, who becomes his closest friend. Pure chance changes everything when Abe and Jill overhear a stranger's conversation and when Abe makes a profound choice, he is able to embrace life to the fullest again. But his decision sets off a chain of events that will affect him, Jill and Rita forever.

James has grown up with the kids' show Brigsby Bear and the program has grown with him as well. One dramatic night, James' insular world is upended. Upon learning the series has been cancelled, he adopts the old adage that the show must go on. By becoming Brigsby Bear's new creator, James finally builds meaningful connections his life has lacked.
