FREDERICK DOUGLASS SUMMER FELLOWSHIPS

Summer 2013

 SUMMER 2013 APPLICATION

Clarion University of Pennsylvania has established the Frederick Douglass Summer Fellowships to offer opportunities to three graduate students who are pursuing a career in college teaching and are in their final year of a terminal degree program.  The fellowships are designed to attract advanced graduate students primarily from HBCU's and HACU's.   Selected scholars will team-and/or co-teach one course during a five-week Summer Session II. The dates for the Summer II session are June 10, 2013 through July 12, 2013.

This program is part of a Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Collaborative that is intended to commemorate Douglass' life-long contributions to equality and public service.  The goals of the program are also consistent with the University's mission to serve historically under-represented populations.

Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens, and must have completed all doctoral work, except the dissertation.  It is expected that the applicant would complete the dissertation by the end of the next academic year.

Terms: The stipend net pay for classroom instruction, community presentations and other duties as assigned (for the full duration of Summer Session II) for 2013 will be approximately $2,956.28. The University will also provide housing assistance, academic support including office space, computer and library privileges, and a competitive allowance, of $1,000.00 for research-related expenses.

During the summer of 2013, the Frederick Douglass Fellows will be assigned to faculty mentors in the appropriate departments, and will be expected to team-and/or co-teach one course during the five-week Summer Session.   The Frederick Douglass Scholars are expected to make at least two presentations on their dissertation topic to the Clarion University community, and to participate in on-campus activities.

Application: Candidates should submit two full sets in hard copy form (electronic applications will not be accepted) of each of the following materials, postmarked by March 31, 2013.

  • a full curriculum vitae and letter of interest
  • a graduate school transcript (a copy of the original transcript is acceptable)
  • a letter from your major or dissertation advisor regarding your qualifications for this program
  • a one page summary of your dissertation topic
  • a letter from at least two additional references regarding your experience and ability (if you had teaching experience, these letters should include information relative to that experience)
