Dr. Thomas Oberst, assistant professor of physics at Westminster College and director of Westminster College Planetarium and Observatory, will discuss exoplanets - planets orbiting other stars - at 7 p.m. Nov. 14 in Hart Chapel. Exoplanets are the hottest topic in astronomy right now. In the past few years, hundreds of exoplanets have been discovered, many of them drastically different from the planets of our own solar system. These discoveries are reshaping our understanding of how planets form and evolve, and, consequentially, of our own place in the cosmos. Oberst will talk about the methods used to detect these planets, covering in particular the "transit" method being used with small telescopes at Westminster College and elsewhere.
