The Mary L. Seifert Cultural Series Endowment of the Clarion University Foundation, Inc. brought Dr. Maya Angelou to Clarion.

The University Activities Board and the Mary L. Seifert Cultural Series Committee worked together to bring  Dr. Maya Angelou to Clarion University on May 2, 2012.  During the hour-long presentation in the auditorium of Marwick-Boyd Fine Arts Center, Dr. Angelou talked about the importance of education, racial equality and people who influenced her, including the teacher who encouraged her to have poetry in her life. Angelou passed that encouragement to the audience, reading one poem and reciting several, both her own and others', from memory. Five students earned the opportunity to meet Angelou by writing essays about how the author had influenced their lives.

Angelou's visit was part of the Mary L. Seifert Cultural Series, which was established to provide the Clarion University community with cultural experiences that inspire learning through thoughtful discussions.
