Virtual Campus Library Services
Each time you contact the library, please identify yourself as a Clarion University virtual campus student. You also will be asked to provide contact information so that resources may be e-mailed, faxed, or mailed to you.
The Library staff is committed to responding to your requests in a timely manner. While online technology makes many resources available in a very short time, library staff sometimes need to send materials by mail or contact other libraries for materials not owned by Clarion University. To insure that materials reach you in time to support your projects, please request resources as soon as possible.
Library Home Page
The Library Home Page serves as a gateway to journal and reference databases, online reference services, internet search engines, online interlibrary loan request forms, and links to other libraries. With few exceptions, resources are accessible from any location with Internet access.
Library Catalog
The Library Catalog (PILOT) is the best way to check for availability of books, journals, and other materials in the University Libraries' collection. In addition to listing materials in the collection, the catalog provides links to many Internet resources and provides detailed holdings information for journal titles. PILOT also includes a simultaneous search feature, which enables a quick search of catalogs of other university libraries in the Keystone Library Network.
Databases
Access to journal and magazine articles is through the A-Z Database list on the Library Homepage. After a database has been chosen, a "Remote Access" login page will appear. Choose either the left or right side of the screen (see sample image below) and type in the required information.
You have two options for logging into periodical databases remotely:

1. You can use your Library ID Number and Last Name (the option on the left-hand side of the screen)
Enter Clarion (Library) ID number and last name
Students: Your Library ID number is 9 + your Clarion ID number
Example: If Clarion ID is "12345678," Library ID Login is "912345678" (without the quotes, of course)
If you don't know your Clarion ID, find instructions here.
Employees: Your Library ID Login is a nine digit number consisting of a series of leading zeros followed by your employee ID number (Use enough preceding zeros to create a nine-digit number.)
Example: If employee ID number (check your paystub) is "98765," Library ID Login is "000098765" (without the quotes, of course)
2. Log In Using Your Clarion Username and Password (the option on the right-hand side of the screen)
Select "Clarion University" from the "Institution" drop-down box
Log in using MyClarion username (without the "@clarion.edu") and MyClarion password
Student Example: "Adam B. Clark" would log in as: s_abclark
Faculty/Staff Example: "Adam B. Clark" would log in as: aclark
If you are having problems with your username/password, you may need to synchronize your password. To do this, go to "Change MyClarion Password" and follow the instructions provided by the Office of Computing Services.
If you continue to have trouble connecting to the library's databases, contact Bill Trimble, Systems Administrator at 814-393-2017 or send him an email at the Libraries' Systems Office.
Use of these services is restricted to registered students, faculty, and staff employees at Clarion University.
-
Many tutorials about using the library's various resources and services are available on the "Library Help" web page.
-
Use one of the Ask A Reference Librarian options to contact the reference department with a question. Reference and Information Services faculty and staff will be pleased to assist with brief reference requests or provide counsel on appropriate resources for projects. Responses to e-mail requests are usually posted within 24 hours.
-
Telephone a Carlson reference librarian at: 814-393-2490.
-
Telephone a Suhr reference librarian at: 814-393-1242 ... or ... 814-676-6591 extension 1242.
-
Nursing students are encouraged to communicate directly with librarians at Suhr Library, Venango Campus, since most nursing books and journals are housed at that library.
The Interlibrary Loan staff makes every effort to help Virtual Campus students and faculty connect with needed resources. InterLibrary Loan (ILL) options are available on the Library Services page. Virtual Campus faculty and students may use ILLiad to request materials owned by Clarion, as well as items which must be requested from other libraries.
Journal Articles
Before requesting an article via ILL, please check to see if the article you need is included in one of the full-text databases accessible through the Journals & Magazines A-Z List. Use the Journals & Magazines A-Z List link which is available on the Library Research Resources page to check availability. Type the journal name in the search box. If the title is available, a link or links to the database(s) will appear on the screen together with the time period covered. Follow the database links.
If the title is not available online, please use ILLiad under Library Services to order copies of needed articles.
-
You will be prompted for a login to access ILLiad, the software used by Clarion University to manage interlibrary loan requests. Click here for Step-by-step directions for using ILLiad. Click here to watch a video about using ILLiad.
-
Log into ILLiad with your Clarion username (without the "@clarion.edu") and your Clarion password. This is the username you use to log into the MyClarion Portal, D2L, and Campus Computer Labs. Example: s_fmlast@clarion.edu The first time you access ILLiad, you will also need to know your Library ID number.
-
Clarion University students: Your Library ID number is 9 + your Clarion ID number.
-
For example, if your Clarion ID is "12345678", your Library ID Login will be "912345678".
-
If you don't know your Clarion ID, you will be able to find it by following the instructions here.
-
-
-
Clarion University employees: Your Library ID Login is a nine-digit number consisting of a series of leading zeroes followed by your employee ID number. (Use enough preceding zeroes to create a nine-digit number.)
-
For example, if your employee number is 98765, your Library ID Login is 000098765.
-
Your employee ID number can be found on your current pay stub.
-
-
-
Interlibrary loan staff will locate a library that has the article and then get it to you as quickly as possible. Frequently, the article is available in electronic format and can be made available to you within 3-7 days. ILLiad is used whenever possible. Otherwise articles are sent via U.S. postal service. If the source requested is difficult to locate or is available only in paper format, the time frame may be 7-14 days. Copies of articles do not need to be returned to the library.
-
Make sure ILLiad request forms are completed as accurately and completely as possible. (If staff needs to verify the bibliographic information - or even your address - the process will take longer.)
-
When you register in ILLIad, provide your CU e-mail address. (If we need to e-mail information you, the University system is better equipped to handle large messages - like articles - than many commercial accounts.)
-
Be sure to keep your campus e-mail account cleared to ensure that articles sent to you are not rejected because of limited file space. Most of the time, however, articles will be delivered to you through the ILLiad software.
-
Request needed materials as early as possible. Clarion's interlibrary loan staff usually processes requests on the day received but turnaround time for filled requests varies considerably. Time frame depends on how readily available materials are elsewhere and the overall request volume at the lending library.
Books Shipped Via Priority Mail Through InterLibrary Loan
In an effort to enhance loan service, library staff is shipping books via "priority mail" to Virtual Campus students. Please help us evaluate this experimental service. When requested books arrive, send an e-mail to interlibrary loan staff confirming the date received. Direct your comments to libloan@clarion.edu. Your assistance is appreciated.
-
Check the Online Catalog (link available under the "Find Books" tab on the Library home) to determine availability of materials at Clarion.
-
Use ILLiad, available on the Library Services page to request titles owned by Clarion University as well as those held by other libraries.

Book materials will be sent to the address you specify.
-
You are responsible for return postage and timely return of materials to the University.
-
Materials available at Clarion University will be shipped to you by U. S. Mail. Please allow at least 7-10 days for delivery.
-
Books which must be requested by Clarion from other libraries may take two to three weeks to reach you. Please keep in mind that once you request books, materials must be requested from another library, delivered to Carlson Library and then sent on to you. The time frame is also affected by availability of materials, location of the lending library (transit time), as well as the request volume at lending libraries.
Renewals
Books from the Clarion University collections may be renewed through PILOT, the Libraries' online catalog. After accessing the catalog, click on the "Renew Books" link at the top of the screen.
Click here to watch a video about how to renew books through PILOT.
Renewals of books from other libraries are permitted at the discretion of the lending library. If you need to renew an interlibrary loan item, please use the renewal request options in ILLiad or contact Clarion's Interlibrary Loan Department well before the due date.
Materials Not Available Through InterLibrary Loan
Occasionally the library will be unable to fill your request. Each library determines its own lending policies. For example: reference books, media, and dissertations are usually unavailable for loan. Other restrictions may also apply. If the InterLibrary Loan Department cannot fill your request, you will be notified as soon as possible through ILLiad.
Loan Periods
Books from the Clarion University Libraries' general collection circulate for four (4) weeks. Juvenile collection and media materials circulate for two (2) weeks. You may renew an item for a second loan period, if no hold has been placed on it. Distance education students may contact the ILL department at 814-393-2481 prior to the due date or by using the renew option available from the online catalog. (Click on the "Renew Books" link.)
Click here to watch a video about how to renew books through PILOT.
Fines are 20 cents per day for general collection items and $1 per day for periodical and reserve items. Please make checks payable to: Clarion University of Pennsylvania. To avoid fines, return or renew all materials by the due date.
Library materials that are 49 days overdue are considered "lost". Patrons are charged the replacement cost of "lost" books plus a $20 (per piece) lost item replacement fee.
Warning: Lost books may result in patron borrowing privileges being revoked until the items are returned and/or the account is cleared.
