Committed to preventing sexual misconduct

May 11, 2016

The Clarion University community would like to express that its faculty, staff and students are committed to preventing all sexual misconduct and sexual violence.

While the students have been on break, faculty and staff members have been engaging in online training facilitated by the Office of Social Equity geared toward making our university community a safe place for everyone in it. Students also are encouraged to participate in this online training.

The training titled "Preventing Sexual Misconduct and Sexual Violence" on the Social Equity Policies and Compliances page is intended to provide each of us first, with an understanding of the conduct that gives rise to allegations of sexual misconduct and discrimination; second, describe the university's procedures for reporting incidents of sexual misconduct and discrimination, and third; identify the state and federal laws that prohibit discrimination under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), Campus SaVE Act, and the Clery Act, Titles VI and VII of the Civil Act of 1964, and The Americans with Disability Act of 1990, etc.

"Clarion University is firmly committed to a working and learning environment that is free of sexual misconduct or discrimination in any of its forms," Clarion University President Karen Whitney said. "Our university mission to '... provide transformative, lifelong learning opportunities through innovative, nationally recognized programs delivered in inclusive, student-centered environments' inspires our collective efforts as a university community."

"Please know that this community considers sexual misconduct to be a form of sex discrimination consisting of various acts that are perpetrated against an individual without the individual's consent or when the individual is unable to freely give consent. This unlawful conduct is an antithesis to the core values of our academic enterprise, and will not be tolerated by the university. We must intentionally seek to maintain a campus culture that recognizes and values the dignity and rights of all our students, faculty, staff, alumni and guests."

If you're a member of the Clarion University community and haven't yet taken part in this online training, please click on the "Online Sexual Misconduct Prevention Training" link on the Social Equity Policies and Compliances page.

"By completing this very important educational program, I thank you for your commitment to a university free of sexual misconduct or discrimination in any of its forms," Whitney said.
