Solo art show portrays empowerment and vulnerability

March 30, 2015

Clarion University senior art major Autumn Wertz will host the opening reception for her solo art show, “Ascendant,” at 6 p.m. April 14 in the university art gallery, on level A of Carlson Library. The show will run April 14-18. Admission is free and open to the public; however, Wertz said the show is not suitable for children.

"Ascendant" showcases Wertz's work from the past two semesters. Wertz, of Tyrone, said her paintings are 6 feet by 6 feet and are influenced by artists Jenny Saville, David Salle and Eric Fishel.

Wertz art show"I insert my own body into the paintings and give myself an animal head," Wertz said. "They are almost entirely nude bodies, to show empowerment and vulnerability, and the animal heads are to demonstrate an understanding that we all have animalistic tendencies."

Being a part of the university community has helped Wertz's development as an artist. Connecting with professors and students of similar interests, working at the university gallery and being president of VizArtz, the university art club, have inspired Wertz in her work. Since the beginning of her presidency of VizArtz in the fall of 2014, Wertz has been able to exhibit shows and stage activities for different students across campus.

"I feel that I benefited most from the leadership and collaboration skills that come with being president," she said.

After graduating, Wertz, who is minoring in art history while earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, will move to an east coast art hub in Asheville, N.C., where she plans to attend the University of North Carolina to earn her Master of Fine Arts degree, and eventually plans to become an art professor and working artist.
