Slattery, Stahler (’08) co-author film review in PsycCRITIQUES

November 24, 2014

Jeanne Slattery, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Clarion University, recently co-authored an article with Catherine Paden (’08) Stahler, Psy.D., "Living With Autism: A Diversity of Opinions – but Are All Equally Valid?" Their article, which reviewed “The United States of Autism” (2013), directed by Richard Everts, appeared in PsycCRITIQUES – Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books. PsycCRITIQUES is the American Psychological Association’s review journal for newly released psychology books and films.

Slattery and Stahler observed that the documentary “puts a face, or rather many faces, on a diagnosis that otherwise can be somewhat elusive,” but they also observed, “while pretending objectivity, the documentary forwarded views on autism that have no credibility in the literature.”  As a result, they would hesitate to recommend it for viewing.

Slattery received her B.A. degree from Illinois State University and her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Miami University. She has been teaching at Clarion University since 1984, and she serves on the editorial board for PsycCRITIQUES. Stahler graduated from Clarion University in 2008 with a degree in elementary education, having performed research with Slattery while an undergraduate. She completed her doctorate in school psychology at Duquesne University in 2013 and is currently working at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh.
