Author discusses how local food can transform local economies

"Communiversity Partners" Clarion/Venango/Forest County Farm Bureau, Clarion University and ABLE (Advisory Board for Leadership and Engagement) present "The Future's in the Dirt: How Local Food Can Transform Local Economies" by Ben Hewitt, author of "The Town That Food Saved," Monday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m., American Legion, 530 Main St., Clarion.

Ben Hewitt tells the story of Hardwick, Vermont, the small town at the center of his best-selling book, "The Town That Food Saved." Over the past five years, Hardwick has revitalized its local economy and reinvigorated its small downtown via the creation of numerous small-scale businesses rooted in sustainable agriculture. By turns thoughtful, inspiring, entertaining and humorous, Ben's presentation explores both the potential and challenges inherent to creating localized food systems that benefit all.

Ben was born and currently resides in northern Vermont, where he writes and operates a diversified, 40-acre organic hill farm with his wife and two sons. He is the author of best-selling books, "The Town That Food Saved: How One Community Found Vitality in Local Food" and "Making Supper Safe: One Man's Quest to Learn the Truth About Food Safety.
