Clarion University has selected Dr. Todd Pfannestiel, history professor, as dean of
the College of Arts and Sciences. Pfannestiel, who came to Clarion in 1998 as a history
instructor, will begin his duties as dean July 1.
In addition to teaching, Pfannestiel has directed the liberal studies program. From 2011 to 2013, he served as faculty fellow for planning, assessment and improvement, coordinating the university’s various divisions in developing strategic plans. He also completed a year-long higher education administration program sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Those roles have helped to prepare Pfannestiel to lead the College of Arts and Sciences.
“Todd was selected following a national search that resulted in a strong pool of very qualified candidates for the dean’s position,” said Dr. Ron Nowaczyk, provost. “I am extremely pleased with the support and confidence Todd’s colleagues have expressed in their recommendation of him as the next leader of the College of Arts and Sciences.”
“In the College of Arts and Sciences, we face a lot of challenges,” Pfannestiel said. “Having been at Clarion for 16 years, I know where many of the challenges are, and I work well with my colleagues. I can hit the ground running July 1.”
His first goal will be to assure students and faculty that he is there to help the college be its best. He plans to do that by growing programs and enrollment; encouraging involvement outside of the classroom, particularly with Clarion’s other colleges; and helping people understand the importance of a liberal education.
“I’ll miss being in the classroom, but I’m really excited about helping the college and the students to fulfill our vision of a liberal arts education,” Pfannestiel said. “I may not have the answers on day one, but I’ll give all of my effort.”
He added that he’ll be the same person with the same work ethic, he’ll just have different responsibilities.
Pfannestiel and his wife, Aimee, an ethics professor at Carlow University, Pittsburgh, live in Clarion.
