Dr. Kathleen Welsch, professor of writing and literature at Clarion University, has been recognized for her contribution to the radio program “Reflections West,” which is about the literature, history and culture of the American West.

Her contribution is a piece about the value of protecting things and people that are unable to protect themselves. She writes about John Randall, a proud Winnebago and the hardships he faced during his life, and how, at 60 years of age, he resides in a care-facility awaiting a heart transplant, where he defends fellow residents who cannot defend themselves.

Welsch compares her piece to an extract by the Indigenous Elders and Medicine Peoples Council which states that we, as people of the earth, must help one another to grow and urge everyone to awaken spiritually. This will allow us to brighten our shared future.

Welsch’s piece aired Dec. 31.
