Admissions requirements

Requirements for regular graduate admission:

  1. A completed Graduate Application
  2. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  3. A minimum GPA of 3.0 at the undergraduate level out of 4.0
  4. Official Transcripts from all colleges/universities attended**
  5. Test Scores (GRE, GMAT, MAT) if required by program - Please allow 4-6 weeks for test scores to arrive in the Graduate Programs office.
  6. Current resume including work experience
  7. Recommendation forms based on your program- please reference our recommendation requirements

** Official Transcripts

Applicants must submit official transcripts from all colleges/universities previously attended. Transcripts must be in sealed envelopes from the schools and delivered to the Graduate Office at Clarion University. Hard copies of transcripts should be mailed to:

Transcripts can be sent electronically from all colleges/universities attended via Transcripts Servies such as Student Clearing House, Parchment, or eScripts. Electronic submissions should be sent to gradstudies@clarion.edu.

Graduate applicants who have an undergraduate or graduate degree from Clarion University are not required to provide transcripts.

Transcripts should indicate if a baccalaureate degree has been awarded. Students apply before completion of a degree may submit current transcripts but will be required to submit final transcripts as soon as they are available.

Individuals not meeting the GPA requirement of a graduate program may be eligible for provisional admission by the program when the lower GPA is evaluated in terms of supplementary factors, including recommendations/references and appropriate examination scores -Miller Analogies Test (MAT), Graduate Record Examination (GRE), or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).

Master of Science Athletic Training

Students who intend to apply for the Master of Science in Athletic Training Program should complete the Graduate Online Application through Clarion University. Applications are reviewed as they are received, and admission decisions are made on a rolling basis until enrollment is full. Cohorts begin during the second 7-week summer session (June 22nd). To be considered for admission to the MSAT, the applicant must meet the following criteria:
 

  • For students admitted prior to June 15, 2020
  1. Preferred minimum GPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0)
  2. Completion of the following courses (or their equivalents) with grades of C or better:
  • Two semesters of Anatomy and Physiology with Lab
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Nutrition
  • Biomechanics or Kinesiology
  • General Psychology
  • Statistics
  1. Complete a successful interview with Clarion’s athletic training faculty (invitation only)
  2. Two electronic references
  3. Resume
  4. Evidence of 40 hours of clinical observation
  5. Students who do not consider English to be their primary language are required to submit official TOEFL iBT scores or IELTS score completed in the last 2 years. Minimum scores (TOEFL internet: 79, IELTS 6.5 or higher).

Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Clarion University's general admission requirements apply, with the following additions:

  • If GPA is below a 3.00, students must submit official scores on the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or GRE.

Master of Science Clinical Mental Health Counseling (MS)

  • Official Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) scores if GPA is below a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Undergraduate minimum quality-point average requirement is 3.0 or above (Provisional admission is possible for students with an undergraduate GPA under 3.0 but above 2.75).
  • Letter stating goals for graduate study.
  • Ask those who will be submitting your recommendations to document your potential and/or effectiveness in the areas of your teaching ability and/or professional performance.
  • Applicants to this program should submit documentation of any prior field experience through human service employment and/or university field experience. This information can be included on the resume.

Early Childhood Certification Program

  • Must meet the general admissions requirements and in addition;
  • Please include a 1-2 page essay describing your educational background, including an explanation of your interest in our graduate program and a reflection of strengths you will be to our program.
  • The program will enroll only those who currently possess Pennsylvania Elementary Certification. These teachers will have met the Pennsylvania teaching competencies and will have completed student teaching. They are not required to student teach again to earn teaching certification in Early Childhood through this program. They will be required to pass the Praxis II exam in Early Childhood before Clarion University will recommend them to PDE for certification.
  • To apply, the candidate must apply for admission online and provide a copy of their Pennsylvania Elementary Certificate and bachelor's degree transcript with their graduate admission package. Also required is documentation of current (within one year) Pennsylvania Act 33 and Act 34 clearances and FBI clearance along with verification of a valid health examination and negative Tuberculin test and proof of $1,000,000 liability insurance.
  • NOTE: Candidates may be subject to program adjustments to meet any new PDE regulations.

Master of Science in Library Science (MSLS)

Clarion University's general admission requirements apply, with the following additions:

  • Overall GPA for the baccalaureate degree of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale;
  • Or a 3.00 GPA for the last 60 credits of the baccalaureate degree with an overall quality point average of at least 2.75; or a 2.75 to 2.99 overall GPA for the baccalaureate degree with a score of at least 412 on the Miller Analogies Test or a combined score of at least 300 on the quantitative and verbal sections of the Graduate Record Examination or new test equivalent; or a graduate degree in another discipline with an overall GPA of at least 3.00.
  • International students are required to achieve a minimum score of 213 computer-based or 80 internet-based on the TOEFL MSLS with Pennsylvania.

Master of Science in Library Science and Juris Doctor Cooperative Program

The department offers a cooperative MSLS/JD program with Widener University School of Law's Harrisburg, PA., campus. Students must be admitted to both programs separately. Any six credits of coursework taken as part of a student's JD program may be applied to that student's MSLS program, and vice versa. These courses will be chosen in consultation with the student's faculty advisors.

MSLS and MA in Applied History Cooperative Program

The department also offers a cooperative program with Shippensburg University. Students must be accepted by each instruction through a separate application process at each university. Students enrolled in these programs will receive a six-hour (two-course) reduction in total hours required for the two degrees.

Certificate of Advanced Studies in Library Science (CAS)

  • In addition to the MSLS requirements submit a letter describing why you want to pursue the CAS program and your activities since receiving your MSLS degree.
  • The Certificate of Advanced Studies program is designed to provide the post-master's student an opportunity to expand and update professional skills and competencies through a structured pattern of continuing education. Study may be either full- or part-time. On a full-time basis, the certificate may be completed in two semesters. Requirements include a written statement of personal/professional goals, completion of a program of 12 graduate credits within a four-year period, and maintenance of a 3.00 GPA. Documentation required for admission includes a goals statement, an official transcript from the school that granted the ALA-accredited master's degree in library science, completed university application for admission form and recommendation forms, and the application fee. MS in Communication  /  Grad Certificate in PR/Health Comm  /                                             Social media man. certificate

  • Must have earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with an overall GPA of 3.0
  • Follow all of the procedures listed for admission to graduate studies at Clarion University
  • Indicate your purpose in pursuing the MMAJ MS degree and/or Graduate Certificate in Public Relations/Social Media Management/Health Communication in your short essay
  • For non-native applicants: submit TOEFL scores of 600 or above
  • For those seeking both the MS degree and the PR/Social Media Management/Health Communication Certificates simultaneously, submit an online application fee with a $40 non-refundable application fee and indicate dual programs sought.
  • Upon request, currently enrolled MMAJ graduate candidates can add the Graduate Certificate in Public Relations/Social Media Management/Health Communication and vice versa.

Master of Science in Nursing  (MSN)

  • Earned baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited program
  • Licensure as a registered nurse in the state where the student plans to complete clinical practicum
  • Undergraduate GPA of 2.75 on a 4.00 scale or a graduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (if seeking second MSN degree)
  • One year of recent full-time clinical practice or two years of part-time clinical practice (2,000 hours)
  • Evidence of completion of a college-level statistics course with a "C" or better
  • Resume of professional experience
  • Essay describing his/her professional goals and expectations regarding how the program will meet these goals
  • Upon receipt of all these materials, an interview with members of the Admission, Progression, and Graduation Committee will be arranged. An application is not considered complete until after the interview.

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

  • Applicants must have a master's degree in nursing or health science from a nationally accredited program.  This may be direct care such as:  nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetist, clinical specialist, nurse midwife, in-direct care such as nurse administrators, nursing informatics and nurse educators
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or other bachelor's degree from an accredited program with a GPA of 3.25 or higher (Applicants must have at least one degree in nursing, either a BSN, BSN equivalent, or a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN).  Applicants with only a diploma degree in nursing or ASN cannot be accepted).                           
  • MSN or other master's degree from an accredited program with a GPA of 3.25 or higher (Applicants with a master's degree other than nursing may require additional coursework prior to enrollment, as determined by a review of official transcripts)    
  • A graduate course in research with a grade of "B" or higher or successful completion of graduate thesis (Note: Completion of a graduate level capstone project will be considered upon review of the project).                     
  • Two professional recommendations; excluding peer reference,
  • Resume/CV
  • Current unencumbered licenses as a Registered Nurse
  • Written documentation of completed clinical hours in a master's program (DNP degree requires a total of 1000 hours of clinical time between the master's and doctoral programs)
  • A type-written 1-2 page personal statement describing your learning goals and a telephone                              interview
  • *Students who have not yet completed their master's degrees:  Admission can be granted to students contingent upon anticipated graduation from their master's degree program during their initial semester in the DNP program.

Master of Science Speech Language Pathology (MS)

Graduate Programs admission requirements apply with the following additions:

  • A baccalaureate degree from an acceptably accredited college or university.

For full admission consideration:

  • An overall GPA for the baccalaureate degree of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • An overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in CSD undergraduate coursework, including all grades for repeated courses.
  • GRE scores are required. Please allow 4-6 weeks for GRE scores to arrive in the Graduate Programs Office.

 A full-admission status is required for graduate assistantship consideration.

For provisional admission consideration for those with less than a 3.0 overall GPA:

  • An applicant must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
  • GRE scores are required. A provisionally admitted student must complete the first nine graduate credits by earning grades of “B” or higher in each course to continue in the program and receive a full-admission status.
  • Provisions of the admission will be outlined in the admission letter.

International students must have a minimum total score of 94 on the TOEFL iBT with the following minimum section requirements:

  •  Reading 22
  • Speaking 26
  • Listening 22
  • Writing 24

 In addition to the above requirements, all applicants must meet the following requirements:

  •  A resume is required.
  • Writing proficiency as demonstrated by a one-page letter of intent.
  • Three faculty and/or professional recommendations; recommendation forms should document applicant’s potential and/or effectiveness in specialization area and/or professional performance. Current Clarion students are not required to submit letters of professional recommendation.
  • Successful personal interview
  • Twelve semester hours of credit in courses related to normal development and the sciences related to the use of speech, hearing, and language; three credits in speech pathology; three credits in language disorders; six credits in audiology, including three credits in aural rehabilitation; three credits in augmentative and alternative communication; 25 clinical observation hours; three credits in statistics; three credits in behavioral/social sciences; three credits in biological sciences and three credits in physics or chemistry. Students may make up undergraduate deficiencies.
  • Post-baccalaureate students must maintain a 3.0 overall GPA in the undergraduate pre-requisite courses in order to progress into graduate coursework. Failure to meet this minimum requirement will delay the start of the student’s graduate program up to one (1) year and may result in dismissal from the program.
