Scholarships

The Department of Biology and Environmental Sciences administers a variety of scholarships for qualified students. All scholarship and award recipients are selected by the Department of Biology and Environmental Sciences Recruiting Committee and approved by the Departmental Chair and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Awards and scholarships represent interest accrued from funds that have been donated by Department of Biology and Environmental Sciences faculty, alumni and other supporters, and invested by the Clarion University Foundation.

The department offers the following scholarships:

ANTHROPOLOGY, GEOLOGY, and EARTH SCIENCES SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline: March 6 (by midnight)
Duration: One-time award Amount: $500

The Anthropology, Geology, and Earth Sciences Scholarship is awarded annually to a student majoring in Anthropology, Geology, or Environmental Geoscience.

BIOLOGY FUND SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline: March 6 (by midnight)
Duration: may be renewed Amount: $1,000

The Biology Fund Scholarship is awarded annually to juniors in any Biology degree program or Medical Technology major. Recipients are selected based upon academic record, contributions to the department and university, and participation in extracurricular activities. To be considered, students need SAT scores higher than 1,200 (combined critical reading and mathematics component), and class rank in the top 20 percent. The awards are continued if requirements are met each year.

COLDWATER CONSERVATION SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Deadline: March 6 (by midnight)
Duration: One-time award Amount: $1,000

This scholarship has been established with the foundation through the sponsorship of the Iron Furnace, the Oil Creek, and the Allegheny Mountain Chapter of Trout Unlimited. It provides a $1,000 annual award to support the education of a senior student who displays a keen interest in conservation of natural aquatic resources, especially cold-water. The award will be based first on a written statement of the student's conservation goals and second their academic record.

DR. BRUCE DINSMORE ECOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline: March 6 (by midnight)
Duration: One-time award Amount: $500

Dr. Bruce Dinsmore Distinguished Faculty in Ecology Scholarships are awarded annually to students enrolled in a Clarion University field course offered through the Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology. Recipients will be selected based on academic excellence, service to the department, university and community, and evidence of a scholarly commitment to ecology and environmental biology. To be considered, students must be a B.S. Biology or B.S. Environmental Biology major and are required to complete a two-page essay summarizing university and community service, participation in research activities, and short-term and longer-term career goals.

DR. PETER AND BARBARA DALBY ECOLOGICAL STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline: Oct. 15
Duration: One-time award Amount: $500

The Dr. Peter and Barbara Dalby Ecological Studies Scholarship is awarded annually to promote and support the goals of the Department of Biology and Geosciences by providing financial assistance to offset the costs of independent studies in ecology. The student conducting the study must be a Biology or Environmental Biology major, have junior or senior standing, have a 3.0 or higher overall GPA, and be a member in good standing of the Clarion University Chapter of The Wildlife Society, Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society, or Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology.

2. An essay summarizing your independent study, career goals, research activities, and current financial support for the study.

4. Resume.

FRANK VENTO SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline: March 6 (by midnight)
Duration: One-time award Amount: $500

Established by a former faculty member, the Frank Vento Scholarship is awarded annually to a student majoring in Geology or Environmental Geosciences who maintains a minimum 3.0 overall GPA.

KIM RUTHERFORD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline: March 6 (by midnight)
Duration: One-time award Amount: $500

The Kim Rutherford Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a freshman or sophomore enrolled in any Biology degree program, except Medical Technology. The recipient is selected based upon academic excellence, participation in extracurricular activities, service to the department and university, the applicant's goals in biology, and demonstrated financial need.

TRACY V. BUCKWALTER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline:  March 6 (by midnight)
Duration: One-time award Amount: $1,000

The Dr. Tracy V. Buckwalter Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a senior who best demonstrates a vital interest and outstanding scholarship in the field of geosciences.
