Lockdown Levels and Procedures

Emergency Lockdown

(Most Danger)

Someone with a visible weapon on campus, armed robbery, shots heard on campus, high risk warrant service in progress or, any event that creates a significant risk to public safety.

1. Go to nearest building or office.

2. Secure all interior and exterior doors.

3. Everything is canceled.

4. Do not leave secured area until directed to do so by University Police or Safety Directors.

5. Wait for further instructions through Eagle Alert on your cell phone (if activated), via the web, or Reverse 911.

Preventative Lockdown

(Low to Moderate Danger)

A serious crime committed in the immediate area of the campus, fresh pursuit of a felon to the immediate campus area, shots heard in the general area of the campus or, any event that creates a risk to public safety.

1. Go to the nearest building or office.

2. Secure exterior building doors only.

3. May conduct class or other business in secured areas.

4. Do not leave secured area until directed to do so by the University Police or Safety Director.

5. Wait for further instructions through Eagle Alert, via the Web, or reverse 911.

Shelter in Place

(Low to Moderate Danger)

Weather emergency to include tornado in the area, high winds, or a chemical, biological, or radiological contaminant release accidently or intentionally into the environment.

1. Go to nearest building and over to the center of building, away from windows and doors.

2. Do not leave the safe area until told to do so by the University Police or Safety Director.

3. Wait for further instructions through Eagle Alert, via the Web, or Reverse 911.

 

 

What you should do

1. If you can safely exit the area, and you have not been told to go to an emergency lockdown, empty your hands and run from the area with your hands open and visible.

2. If you cannot do #1, proceed to a room that can be locked, get on the floor, do not bunch together with other people, stay out of sight of the door. If the room cannot be locked, pile desks or other heavy furniture in front of the door.

3. Call 393-2111, or from a campus phone 2111, or if the line is busy, dial 911. Tell the dispatcher what is taking place and inform him/her of your exact location. DO NOT ASSUME somebody has already called the po0lice.

4. Officers responding to your location will use a procedure called Rapid Deployment that is designated to stop the shooting as quickly as possible. Officers will NOT stop to render first aid or to evacuate the building. If you know where the shooter is located, tell the officers.

5. When the incident is over, police will not generally let you leave the area until all witnesses are identified and questioned.
