The main reason behind this decision was the massive amount of waste we were experiencing in the public labs and libraries. Boxes of documents that were never picked up from the printers could be collected at the end of each day. While the situation was slowly getting worse over the years, the amount of waste over the past three years had grown tremedously. In the six weeks between July 19 - August 30, 2004 29,000 pages were printed on Level 1 of the library, and within 1 hour on August 30, 2004 over 1,000 pages were printed in the BI Lab of the library.
One reason for this exponential increase in printing is the availability of on-line resources. Increased access to full-text articles, both through the libraries' subscription services and on the Web in general, has shifted photocopying magazine articles and book pages (a fee-based service) to printing from the Web.
