The Coordinator of Transitions Services

The Coordinator of Transitions Services is responsible for the outcome of work with multiple colleagues in the Divisions of Student/University Affairs and Academic Affairs in the planning development, implementation, and assessment of the comprehensive Transitions Program.

The Coordinator of Transitions Services works with a Transitions Team comprising faculty, staff, management, and other campus support entities to develop, assess, and supervise the implementation of co-curricular Transitions retention initiatives.  The Coordinator works with the Transitions Team to establish policies and implementation guidelines for Transitions activities and programs.  Specifically, in collaboration with the Transitions Team, the Coordinator develops and supervises the New Student Orientation program for all FTIC and Transfer students; directs, develops and supervises the implementation of Discovery Weekend for all new students; and, in partnership with the Exploration, Focus, and Academic Mentoring faculty, coordinates, develops and supervises the implementation of Exploration (the first year experience co-curricular), Focus (the sophomore year co-curricular), and Academic Mentoring (the junior-senior year co-curricular).  The Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the continuing development and evolution of the Transitions Program.  The Coordinator is responsible for systematic student learning outcomes assessments and analyses, follow-up procedures and actions, and referral methods to connect students to campus resources and departments to further their success and connection to the institution. The coordinator has the primary leadership role in assessing and understanding the Clarion student population to better understand profiles, needs, and retention issues that can strategically shape programs and services provided to support students. The Coordinator supervises Student/University Affairs staff members who implement Transitions Programming for students.  The coordinator also works closely with parents and family members of Clarion University students as this position works with the Assistant Director of Campus Life who directs the parent/family services office and ensures that the needs of parents and families are met.

Minimum Qualifications

A Master’s Degree in College Student Personnel, Student Affairs Administration, Education, or closely related program, and a minimum of three years of experience working with orientation, first-year students, or freshman seminar. Experience with a comprehensive university experience program is preferred.  Supervisory and budgetary experience are preferred. Web and database familiarity are preferred.  Completion of a successful interview is required.

Transitions Implementation Team Responsibilities

Provide leadership for the Transitions Team which includes colleagues in Enrollment Management, Student/University Affairs, Academic Affairs, and other academic and support departments all working together to provide a comprehensive transitional program for new students, parents, and family members.

Lead weekly meetings to ensure collaboration among management, student/university affairs staff, faculty, and other academic and support units to provide a comprehensive, multi-year, transitional program for new students, parents, and family members.

Plan, organize, and lead weekly meetings with the Transitions Team.

Initiate and maintain effective communications and planning activities among the members of the Transitions Team and among members of the university community.

New Student Orientation Responsibilities

Plan, develop, assess, and supervise implementation of the New Student Orientation program, working with all university constituencies including Honors, EOP, Summer Start, TRIO programs, Disability Support Services, and commuter students to implement special programming to meet the needs of these various student populations.

Select and hire Transitions staff.

Develop and supervise comprehensive training programs for Orientation Leaders, Graduate Assistants, faculty, and staff.

Assess New Student Orientation and implement changes where needed.

Responsible for all correspondence related to New Student Orientation for newly admitted students, correspondence related to first year co-curricular experience, and correspondence related to Transitions sophomore, junior, and senior year Transitions programming.

Supervise maintenance of the Transitions databases and the “My Activities” databases.

Discovery Weekend Responsibilities

Responsible for the outcome of work with multiple colleagues in the Divisions of Student/ University Affairs and Academic Affairs, and the Office of Public Safety in the planning, development, implementation and assessment of the Discovery Program, a three-day program for all new students, prior to the start of the fall and spring semesters.

Direct mandatory programs for all new students during Discovery weekend.

Supervise students and Student/University Affairs staff during Discovery Weekend.

Exploration Responsibilities

Collaborate with various colleagues in the Divisions of Student/University Affairs and Academic Affairs in the planning, development, and assessment of the Exploration Program, a one credit co-curricular program for first year students.

Supervise implementation of the Exploration Program.

Develop, supervise, and assess training, in the fall and spring semesters, for student facilitators and faculty and staff observers for Exploration.

Recruit Clarion staff and faculty volunteer observers for Exploration.

Participate, with the Exploration faculty, in the training of staff and faculty volunteer observers for Exploration.

Coordinate and track student facilitator and professional observer pairings.

Create and supervise implementation of student learning and satisfaction outcomes assessments for Exploration.

Develop and maintain training manual/documents for student Exploration facilitators and observers.

Write the Exploration modules in collaboration with the Exploration faculty.

Focus Responsibilities

Collaborate with various colleagues in the Division of Student/University Affairs, the Division of Academic Affairs, and Office of the Registrar in the planning, development, and assessment of the Focus Program, a one credit co-curricular program for sophomores.

Supervise implementation of the Focus program, including maintenance of the “My Activities” website and co-curricular transcript registration and verification processes.

Create and supervise implementation of student learning and satisfaction outcomes assessments for Focus.

Develop, supervise, and assess training (fall and spring semesters) for Focus student facilitators, faculty, and staff.

Develop and maintain training manual/documents for the “My Activities” and co-curricular programs, as well as other related programs. 

Academic Mentoring Responsibilities

Collaborate with various colleagues in the Division of Student/University Affairs, the Division of Academic Affairs, and Office of the Registrar in the planning, development, and assessment of the Academic Mentoring Program, a one credit co-curricular program for juniors and seniors.

Collaborate with Academic Mentoring faculty, the professional staff in the Career Services Center, and academic departments in the development, supervision, and assessment of the training of (fall and spring semesters) Academic Mentoring student facilitators, faculty, and staff.

Collaborate with Academic Mentoring faculty, the professional staff in the Career Services Center, and faculty in the academic departments in the creation and implementation of learning modules for the Academic Mentoring one-credit class.

Collaborate with Academic Mentoring faculty, the professional staff in the Career Services Center, and faculty in the academic departments in the creation and implementation of student learning and satisfaction outcomes assessments for the Academic Mentoring one-credit class.

Collaborate with Academic Mentoring faculty, the professional staff in the Career Services Center, and faculty in the academic departments to implement the Academic Mentoring one-credit class, including collaborative responsibilities for training of staff, students, and faculty who are involved in the implementation of the class.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Select, hire, train, and supervise student staff members and Graduate Assistants.

Supervise staff related to Transitions programs, including the Assistant Director of Campus Life, who is assigned to work with New Student Orientation and Discovery Weekend.

Responsible for the budget of the Transitions Program, including responsibility for recommendations regarding expenditures, fee structures, and allocations.

Provide administrative oversight for the development of marketing materials (both printed and electronic) consistent with overall recruitment and retention efforts.

Develop internship opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students wishing to work with Transitions programs.

Other Responsibilities

Supervise the overall development, implementation, assessment, modification, and tracking of Transitions programs.

Serve as the Campus Life representative for the university-wide Retention Committee.

Perform other related responsibilities as assigned.
