9 Eagle Placewinners
CLARION THIRD AT 65TH PSAC WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Clarion’s resurging wrestling team placed third at the 65th Annual PSAC Wrestling Championships on Saturday, featuring 9 placewinners.
Held at Clarion’s W.S. Tippin Gym, Edinboro won their 9th team title in the last 11 years with 152.5 team points. Bloomsburg ended second with 118.5, Clarion finished third with 88.5 points and Lock Haven fourth with 76. Rounding out the eight team field were fifth place Shippensburg with 62 points, Millersville seventh with 51.5, East Stroudsburg seventh with 46 and Kutztown eighth with 34.
Second year Golden Eagle head coach Teague Moore was proud of Clarion’s effort. “We set a goal of finishing third at this year’s PSAC’s to show that we’re making a move to bring this program back,” said Moore. “I thought we wrestled with pride and character and I’m very proud of our performance as a team. We’re still young as a team, but we’re showing real progress through hard work, dedication and sacrifice. I like the direction we’re headed.”
Clarion’s nine placewinners included Sal Lascari who was second at 141, third place finishers Hadley Harrison (149), Travis Uncapher (157) and Dave Cox (165), fourth place Jay Ivanco (125), fifth place finishers Rob LaBrake (133), Mario Morelli (174), Dixon Jordan (197) and a sixth place finish from Scott Joseph (184).
Lascari lost a tough 5-4 decision to Shippensburg’s Steve Fittery in the finals at 141. Lascari led 4-3 entering the third period when Fittery escaped to tie the match 4-4. Fittery won the bout with 1:53 riding time. Lascari made the finals with an opening pin over Seth Creasy (LH) at 5:43, then a 12-5 win over Edinboro’s Torsten Gillespie.
Harrison also won an impressive 8-6 decision over Bloomsburg’s Dennis Bermudez for third place. Harrison opened the tournament with a 7-3 win over Chris Chambers, lost 3-2 to eventual champion Daryl Cocozzo, then came back with a 12-1 win over Millersville’s Cody Becker before defeating Bermudez.
Uncapher, a true freshman, defeated Millersville’s Jarrett Hostetter 5-5, tie breaker 2 to take third place at 157. He won the tie breaker with 18 seconds of riding time. Uncapher was 3-1 on the day. He defeated John Mangini (LH) 8-2, lost to Bloom’s Matt Moley 11-2, then wrestled back with an 11-7 win over Dan Nauman (Ship) and his win over Hostetter.
Cox finished third at 165 with an very impressive 8-7 win over 2007 PSAC runner-up Ricky Schmelyun of Bloomsburg. Cox opened with a 4-3 win over Jake Wilson (Ship), was pinned by eventual winner Jarrod King (Edinboro) and decisioned Dave Morey (Millersvlle) 11-5.
Ivanco finished fourth at 125 when he lost his final bout 4-2 to Lock Haven’s John Trumbetti. Jay was 2-2 on the day. He won 11-2 against E. Stroudsburg’s Matthew Benedetti, lost 11-6 to Edinboro’s Eric Morrill, he majored John Andel (Millersville) 11-3 before losing to Trumbetti.
LaBrake opened at 133 losing by fall to Jason Guffy (Bloom) to open the tournament, then bounced back to decision Ship’s Josh Proctor 8-6, lost 3-2 to Matt Swallow (E.Stroud) and won for fifth by forfeit.
Morelli finished fifth at 174 when he won by medical forfeit in his place match. Mario opened with a 6-3 loss to Tom Kocher (LH), came back to post an 11-2 decision over Jeremy Brooks (Millersville), and was pinned by Bloom’s Nate Graham at 3:52.
Dixon Jordan placed fifth at 197 when he pinned Bloom’s Nick Sacco at 6:41. Jordan lost in his opening bout 6-1 to eventual winner Pat Bradshaw (Edinboro), he then defeated Ray Bennett (Mllersville) 11-8, lost to Ship’s Pete Grodziak 4-1, then pinned Sacco.
Joseph finished sixth at 184 with a 1-3 record. He opened with a 4-3 win over Kutztown’s Kyle Davis, then lost 13-2 to Edinboro’s eventual champion Dan Thompson 13-2, lost to Ship’s Jon Hade (2-1), then lost to Millersville’s Steve Funk 4-0.
Heavyweight Roman Husam was 0-2 at heavyweight. He lost by fall at 2:44 to champion Mike Spaid, and lost 4-2 to Kutztown’s Kevin Bolinsky.
CLARION PSAC NOTES: Coach Moore, in his second year, keeps moving the Golden Eagles forward… The team’s third place finish is the highest since placing third in 2002 at PSAC’s… He pushed Clarion to a 4th place finish last year, which was far ahead of Clarion’s 8th place finish in 2006…. The Golden Eagles are 2-4 in duals and will travel to Lock Haven next Sunday (Dec. 16) to take part in the Lock Haven duals starting at 9am … Updated Clarion records … Ivanco (14-4), LaBrake (3-5), Lascari (5-4), Harrison (7-3), Uncapher (7-3), Cox (6-4), Morelli (4-6), Joseph (3-7), Jordan (3-7), Husam (2-6) … Edinboro’s 7 PSAC Champions tied Clarion’s record setting 7 PSAC Champions in 1983, which ironically took place at Edinboro… Bob Bubb was the head coach in 1983 for the Golden Eagles … On Saturday he was the PSAC Tournament Director at Tippin Gym… Clarion has 106 individual PSAC Champions … The last champions were in 2005 with Frank Edgar and Chris Horning.
(CLARION, PA): Edinboro University won the 65th Annual PSAC Wrestling Championship on Saturday night.
Held at Clarion University’s W.S. Tippin Gymnasium, Edinboro won the team title with 152.5 points, while Bloomsburg was second with 118.5 and Clarion third with 88.5 points. Lock Haven finished fourth with 76.0 points, Shippensburg fifth with 62.0, Millersville sixth with 51.5, East Stroudsburg seventh with 46.0 and and Kutztown eighth with 34.0.
Edinboro’s Gregor Gillespie, the champion at 157, was named the Tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler.
Edinboro posted seven individual champions in winning the team title, which tied the record for most individual champions originally set by Clarion in 1983, also with 7 champions.
Winning for the Fighting Scots were Ricky Deubel (133), Daryl Cocozzo (149,), Gregor Gillespie (157), Jarrod King (165), Phillip Moricone (174), Daniel Thompson (184), and Pat Bradshaw (197).
Other PSAC individual champions included Michael Sees of Bloomsburg at 125, Steve Fittery of Shippensburg at 141 and Mike Spaid of Bloomsburg at heavyweight.
PSAC Notes: Edinboro won its third straight team title and the 9th title in the last 11 years… Edinboro titles were in 2007, 2006, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2000, 1999, 1998… Bloomsburg’s Mike Sees at 125 and Mike Spaid at heavyweight became three-time winners… Both won titles in 2006, 2007 and now in 2007-08.
