MOUNTAINEERS TOP CLARION 38-6

            (CLARION, PA): Clarion won the opening two bouts and jumped out to a 6-0 lead after 133-pounds, but West Virginia reeled off 8 straight wins and rallied to defeat the Golden Eagles on Sunday afternoon by a 38-6 final.

            Held at Clarion’s Waldo S. Tippin Gym, the Golden Eagles fell to 7-7 overall and 0-2 in the EWL, while West Virginia raised its record to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the EWL.

            Clarion posted the first two wins of the match when Patrick Feeley (Fr. Johnston, R.I.) decisioned Scott Stuart 3-2 at 125-pounds, then sophomore Sal Lascari (Gray) decisioned Mark Anderson 12-6 at 133. Lascari five takedowns and a reversal in his win and Clarion led 6-0.

            WVU’s #11 rated Brandon Rader started the comeback with a 12-5 decision over Greg Lewis (So. New Providence), and teammate Dave Jauregui came right back with a technical fall win over Hadley Harrison (Fr. McKean) 20-5 at 6:50 to give the Mountaineers an 8-6 advantage.

            After WVU’s #16 ranked Zach Fryling tech falled Lucas Christopher (So. McMurray) 22-7 at 6:06, Clarion tried to bounce back with freshman Mario Morelli (DuBois) at 165.

            Morelli was tied 2-2 with WVU’s Eric Connolly with about 30 seconds left in the third and riding his opponent when Connolly escaped to take a 3-2 lead. Morelli had Connolly’s leg in the air and looked to be heading toward a takedown when time ran out on the Eagle freshman.

            WVU won the final four bouts, including a pin at heavyweight. Clarion heavyweight A.J. Brooks was trailing 4-3 entering the second period when he was pulled straight to his back and pinned at 3:18 by Dustin Rogers.

            Clarion, under first year head coach Teague Moore will now be off until Saturday, January 27^th when the Golden Eagles travel to Bloomsburg for the PSAC Championships. Clarion’s next home duals come on Friday Feb. 2^nd against Bloomsburg and Saturday Feb. 3^rd against Rider.
