PITT DEFEATS CLARION 34-3 IN EWL DUAL

            (CLARION, PA.): Pitt won nine of ten matches and defeated Clarion in an EWL (Eastern Wrestling League) dual meet tonight by a final score of 34-3.

            Held at Clarion’s W.S. Tippin Gymnasium, the Golden Eagles dropped to 7-10 on the season and 0-4 in the EWL, while Pitt raised its record to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the EWL.

            Pitt swept the first three bouts, two by a single point, to take a 9-0 team lead. At 125 Pitt’s Brad Gentzle was awarded a stall point with 30-seconds left to defeat Clarion’s Patrick Feeley 5-4.

            The Panthers Jimmy Conroy notched a 7-6 decision over Clarion’s Sal Lascari at 133, and Joe Ciampoli was a 5-2 winner over Greg Lewis at 141.

            The Golden Eagles only win came at 149 pounds where freshman Hadley Harrison scored an 11-1 major decision over Mark Generalovich. Harrison was ahead 5-0 entering the third period when he scored 2 takedowns, a stall point and riding time to gain his 20^th win of the season.

            After Pitt’s Matt Kocher pinned Lucas Christopher at 5:25, Clarion’s Mario Morelli locked in a tight battle with Sean Richmond at 165. Tied 1-1 in the third, Richmond picked up the go ahead takedown midway through the period, and a second one late in the third to go ahead 5-3. Morelli back tripped Richmond with about five seconds to go and nearly scored the tying points, but could not get them as time ran out.

            With Pitt gaining wins at 174, 184 and 197, the teams headed to a good heavyweight battle between #20 ranked Zach Sheaffer of Pitt and Clarion’s AJ Brooks. Sheaffer won a narrow 6-3 decision, with Brooks nearly getting a takedown in the final minute of the match. Clarion’s bench felt it was a takedown, and after making its point, was deducted a team point to make the final score Pitt 34 Clarion 3.

            The Golden Eagles will return to Tippin Gym on Friday as Clarion will host Eastern Michigan for a 7:30pm matchup.
