CLARION’S A.J. BROOKS FINISHES SECOND AT HWT.
GOLDEN EAGLES 7th AT EWL’S/SEND ONE TO NCAA’S
(Cleveland, Ohio): Clarion University heavyweight A.J. Brooks lost a 5-3 decision in the heavyweight finals Sunday night against Bloomsburg’s Mike Spaid at the 32nd EWL League Championships.
Brooks reached the finals with two impressive and exciting wins. He opened the EWL’s on Saturday with a 4-2 win in the second overtime period against Pitt’s Zach Sheaffer. Sheaffer was the 2005 EWL heavyweight champion.
Then on Saturday night Brooks used a takedown with 36-seconds left in overtime to defeat WVU’s Dustin Rogers 3-1 to advance to the EWL (Eastern Wrestling League) finals.
Spaid opened the first period with a takedown, while about a minute later Brooks reversed to tie the match 2-2. Spaid escaped and led 3-2 after the first. Spaid escaped in the second and Brooks in the third to make it 4-3, while the Bloom heavyweight added 1:02 in riding time to make the final 5-3.Brooks has a season record of 18-11.
“AJ had a very strong tournament,” said Clarion’s first year head coach Teague Moore. “He held his mat position well, and posted two critical takedowns in overtime to get himself to nationals. It was a very clutch performance.”
Held at Cleveland State’s Homer Woodling Gymnasium, Edinboro won the EWL team title with 113 points, the ninth time in the last 10 years the Fighting Scots have won or tied for first at the league championships. West Virginia finished second with 104.5, Lock Haven third with 98, Pittsburgh fourth with 95.5, Bloomsburg fifth with , Cleveland State sixth with 77.5 and Clarion seventh with 35 points.
Deonte Penn, the EWL champion at 165-pounds, was named the tournament’s “Outstanding Wrestler” by a vote of the league’s head coaches.
Clarion also saw sophomore Dominic Ross finish fifth at 174-pounds, while Sal Lascari (133), Hadley Harrison (149), Mario Morelli (165) and Dixon Jordan (197) all finished in sixth place.
Ross lost his opening match 13-5 to WVU’s Kurt Brenner and his wrestle back match 6-5 in the final seconds against Lock Haven’s Mike Metzger. For fifth Ross defeated Bloomsburg’s Andrew Jordan 8-6. He had two, third period takedowns to pace his win. The sophomore from Sharon finished the year 15-15
Lascari, also a sophomore, won his first match on Saturday, a 5-3 victory over Nick Hyatt (LH), but he lost to Drew Headlee (Pitt) 10-2, and both of his wrestle back matches on Sunday, including an 8-5 loss to Hyatt for fifth.
Morelli (DuBois) and Harrison (McKean) finished sixth respectively at 165 and 149. Morelli lost in overtime by fall to LH’s Landis Wright on Saturday night, but injured his ankle in the process. Hobbled, he trailed CSU’s Marcus Effner 8-4 late in his consi match when he threw a high risk move and ended up losing 14-4. He medical forfeited his final match to finish the year with a record of 13-14.
Harrison lost his opening bout to Matt Moley (Bloom) 10-2, then lost to CSU’s Ryan Hurley 5-2, before suffering a leg injury in the first period of his fifth place match and injury defaulting to Lock Haven’s Donnie Ament at 53-seconds. He ends his season with a record of 21-19.
Dixon Jordan was 0-3 at 197 EWL’s and finished sixth. He was 6-24 this season. Going 0-2 this weekend were Greg Lewis at 141, Lucas Christopher at 157, and Scott Joseph at 184. Lewis finishes 15-14, Christopher was 4-17 and Joseph (6-24).
CLARION NOTES: Clarion has 51 EWL Champions since the league started in 1976 … The Golden Eagles have had at least 1 EWL individual champion in every year since 1976 except 1983, 89, 2000, 2006 ….
