CLEVELAND STATE 44 CLARION  3

(Cleveland, Ohio): Cleveland State registered four falls on Sunday afternoon on its way to defeating Clarion 44-3 in an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet.

Clarion fell to 7-12 overall and 0-5 in the EWL, while Cleveland State raises its record to 10-4 and 3-2 in the EWL.

Cleveland State won the first six bouts to jump out to a 30-0 lead. The Vikings Ryan Riggs defeated Clarion’s Patrick Feeley 3-2 at 125-pounds to start the afternoon. His takedown with 15-seconds left in the third broke a 1-1 tie. Feeley escaped with two seconds left to make the final 3-2.

CSU’s Dave Armstrong pinned Tony Lascari at 44-seconds, then Mike Hurley won an injury default over Greg Lewis with 33-seconds gone in the first period. And CSU was ahead 15-0.

Clarion freshman Hadley Harrison wrestled a strong bout against Ryan Hurley before losing in the last second 5-4. Harrison scored a takedown with 20-seconds left to take a 4-3 lead. Riding near the edge with 8-seconds to go, Harrison was called for stalling and a restart. Off the restart, Hurley got to his feet and reversed at the buzzer to win 5-4.

CSU used the momentum to post falls at 157 and 165 to put the match out of reach.

Clarion scored its only win at 174 when Dominic Ross decisioned Nate Kmetz 13-9. Ross had two first period takedowns to lead 5-3, and a late takedown in the second to jump ahead 9-5. A final takedown midway through the third period gave Ross an 11-6 before winning 13-9.

At 184 Scott Joseph was defeating Dave Gilkey 4-3 before getting pinned at 3:37, then Chris Hahn posted an 8-2 technical fall over Dixon Jordan at 197.

Clarion’s AJ Brooks battled Rashard Goff to the wire before losing 9-8. Brooks had a reversal and a takedown in the first period but the score was tied 4-4. Trailing 6-5 heading into the third period, Goff escaped, but Brooks posted a takedown with 40-seconds left for a 7-7 tie, however Goff had 1:35 riding time on the board so Brooks had to cut Goff loose. Brooks took several shots, and Goff was warned twice for stalling, the second time with 8-seconds left and an 8-8 tie. But Goff still had the riding point on the board and won by a 9-8 margin.

Clarion’s final dual meet of the 2007 season will be at Lock Haven on Sunday, February 18th at 2pm.
