CLARION DEFEATS DAVIDSON (33-12)/EDGED BY BUFFALO (23-16)

            (Buffalo, N.Y.) Clarion’s NCAA Division I Wrestling team split a dual meet on Thursday by defeating Davidson 33-12, and dropping a tough 23-16 decision to Buffalo.

            Held at UB’s Alumni Arena, the Golden Eagles raised their dual meet record to 5-5 under first year head coach Teague Moore.Buffalo is 3-3 and Davisdon 0-3.

            The Golden Eagles won 7 of 10 bouts against Davidson and opened that match with a key 8-2 win by freshman Mario Morelli (DuBois) at 165 over Trebor Clavette.

            Davidson rallied to lead 12-9 when heavyweight A.J. Brooks won by forfeit, Toby Seger (Jr. Glenshaw) and Tyler Leljedal (Fr. Towanda) both secured decisions at 125 and 133 respectively for a 15-12 Clarion lead.

            Then Greg Lewis (So. New Providence) and Hadley Harrison (Fr. McKean) won by falls at 141 and 149 to put the match out of reach. Lewis pinned Ben Thompson at 6:18, while Harrison had a first period pin over Scott Matthews. Nick Billups won by forfeit to close the match with a 33-12 Clarion win over Davidson.

            Against Buffalo the Golden Eagles jumped out to an exciting a16-6 lead through the first six bouts, winning five.

            Clarion’s Seger decisioned Sean Bauer (6-4) at 125, while Lewis decisioned Andrew Stella 11-4 at 141 and Hadley Harrison posted a 12-3 major decision at 149 over Ryan Needle.

            The momentum continued with Nick Billups (So. Princeton, Iowa) getting a 5-3 win over Justin Hunt and Morelli came back with an exciting 3-2 win in the second tie breaker at 165 over Mike Ragusa. With the match tied at 2-2, the duo went through the first overtime and tie breaker with no scoring. In the second tie breaker Morelli rode Ragusa in the first 30-second tie breaker, then escaped with about 5-seconds left in his period to win the bout.

            Clarion led 16-6 entering 174 and Scott Joseph took his bout with Nate Rock into overtime at 1-1. In the tied breaker Rock scored a nearfall, then added a takedown and penalty points to win 8-1, turing the momentum back to Buffalo.

            After Dixon Jordan lost a technical fall at 197 Buffalo held a 20-16 team lead entering heavyweight. In that bout A.J. Brooks lost 2-1 to Jeff Parker. Brooks was called for an illegal interlocking of hands against Parker in the second period which proved to be the winning points.

            Harrison (13-7), Lewis (9-4) and Brooks (11-4) are the Golen Eagles top records, while Morelli has now jumped to 7-2. Sal Lascari (14-6) did not wrestle today but will return to action next Saturday.

            Clarion travels to Binghamton (NY) on Saturday, January 13th to face Binghamton and Delaware State in another double dual. Match time is 2pm.
