GOLDEN EAGLES RAISE 2007 RECORD TO 7-5
CLARION WRESTLERS DEFEAT BINGHAMTON & DELAWARE STATE
(BINGHAMTON, N.Y.): First year Clarion head coach Teague Moore saw his team post wins over Delaware State and Binghamton on Saturday afternoon which raised the Golden Eagles to 7-5 overall on the 2007 season.
Wrestled at Binghamton University’s West Gym, Clarion dropped Delaware State 37-9, then bounced right back in the nightcap to edge the Bearcats 26-21.
In the opening 37-9 win over Delaware State, the Golden Eagles used a pin from Hadley Harrison (Fr. McKean) at 149, a major decision by Dominic Ross (So. Sharon) at 165 and decisions from Scott Joseph (Fr. Export) at 174, Dixon Jordan (Fr. Cheverly Md.) at 197 and Greg Lewis (So. New Providence) at 141 to pace the win. Clarion also received forfeit wins at 125, 133 and heavyweight.
In the 26-21 win over host Binghamton, Clarion rallied from an early 18-3 deficit to win five of the final six bouts to post an impressive come-from-behind win.
In the first four bouts against the Bearcats only Dominic Ross at 165 could post a victory for the Golden Eagles when he decisioned Sam Sirotta 5-3 with a takedown with only 45-seconds left in the match.
After Scott Joseph was pinned at 174 and the Eagles forfeit over 184, Binghamton held an 18-3 lead when freshman Dixon Jordan stepped onto the mat. The Clarion freshman responded with a pin of Ed Backus at 1:26 to turn the momentum in the Eagles favor.
Clarion heavyweight A.J. Brooks (So. Lewes, De.) decisioned Mike Patterson 8-2, then 125-pounder Patrick Feeley (Fr. Johnston, R.I.) pinned Mike Kleeman at 5:25 to tie the score 18-18.
Sal Lascari (So. Gray) won an 11-2 major decision over Kareem Naguib at 133, and teammate Greg Lewis notched a 14-2 major decision over Patrick Sandberg to give Clarion an insurmountable 26-18 lead.
In the final bout at 149. Binghamton’s #17 ranked Kyle Fried scored a takedown with 10-seconds left to break a 1-1 tie and post a 4-1 decision over Hadley Harrison.
Top Clarion records now include Lascari (16-6), Lewis (11-4), Harrison (14-8), Ross (9-4) and Brooks (13-4).
“We really wanted to come up here and get these two wins today and we’re pleased to have accomplished that mission,” said coach Moore. “Dixon Jordan really helped us turn the Binghamton match around with his pin at 197. He’s the “OW” of the day.
Clarion returns to action on Friday, January 19th when the Eagles visit Edinboro. Match time at McComb Field House is set for 7:30. Clarion returns home to host West Virginia on Sunday, January 21st at 2pm.
