CLARION WRESTLERS 1-2 AT PA. STATE DUALS
(LOCK HAVEN, PA.): Clarion heavyweight A.J. Brooks pinned Millersville’s Josh Haron at 2:49 lifting Clarion to a 24-22 win over Millersville on Sunday afternoon at the Pennsylvania State Duals hosted by Lock Haven.
The opening action for the Golden Eagles in the 2006-07 season under first year coach Teague Moore, Clarion posted a 1-2 record on the day. The Golden Eagles lost the opener to #8 ranked Penn State 47-0, then lost to host Lock Haven 32-18 before rallying to defeat Millersville 23-22.
In the Millersville match, Clarion jumped out to an 11-0 lead when Toby Seger pinned Mike Acedo-Malaney at 125 and Sal Lascari posted a technical fall, 19-4 over John Lester at 133.
The Marauders came back with a decision, a pin and a major in the next three weight classes for a 13-11 lead. Clarion bounced right back when Dominic Ross decisioned Matt Veres 13-9 and led 14-13.
Millersville won a decision at 174 and a pin at 184 to jump in front 22-13, but the Golden Eagles were ready to rally. Freshman Jacob Kurant notched a 5-3 decision over Mike Langor, setting the stage for Brooks’ big pin.
“It’s a win and that’s the important thing,” analyzed coach Moore. “Jake and A.J. knew what they had to do, and they went out and got it done. Overall the three matches provide a measuring stick for us to know where we are, how much work we need to do and where we need to go from here.”
Although the Eagles were shut out against a really good Penn State squad, Moore was pleased with some quality performances at 133, 141, 157, 174 and heavyweight. Lascari gave a good account of himself in a 3-1 loss against #8 Strayer at 133, while Lewis was equally tough in a 4-0 loss to Heller. At 157 Billups was ahead in the third period 4-2 before he got caught and pinned, and Scott Joseph was tied 7-7 with #3 Yonushonis in the third period before losing 14-8. At heavyweight Brooks lost 5-4 to senior Anspach in another close match.
“We have some things to work on, but we also had some bright spots today,” said Moore. “Like we said last week, its about staying healthy and improving every day until March. That’s still our mission.”
