(Pittsburgh, PA.): The Pitt Panthers won seven bouts on Tuesday night on their way to defeating Clarion 31-9 in an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet.

Pitt raised its overall record to 3-8 and 1-3 in the EWL. Clarion dropped to 0-14 and 0-4 in the EWL.

Clarion won three bouts against the Panthers including a win at 133 by freshman Matt Myers, Dave Gardner’s win at 174 and A.J.Brooks finishing the match with a win at heavyweight.

Myers posted a 5-2 decision over Brandon Skonieczsky with a first period takedown, and an escape and takedown in the third period.

Gardner,a junior, raised his record to 13-12 this season with a 4-2 win over Nick Padezan. Gardner used a first period takedown and a third period reversal for his winning points.

At heavyweight, freshman A.J. Brooks won his sixth of his last eight matches by defeating Lou Thomas 3-2. Brooks, down 1-0 in the third, had an escape and then a takedown with a minute to go to win the bout.

Freshman 141-pounder Greg Lewis threw a scare into nationally ranked and former EWL champion Ron Tarquinio. Lewis used a takedown in the third period with about 40-seconds left to narrow his margin to 3-2, but couldn’t get any backpoints to try and pull out the victory.

Maybe the most exciting match came at 149 where Clarion freshman Derrick Thomas lost a 7-7 by overtime critera decision to Joey Ecklof of Pitt. Ecklof ended with 9 seconds of riding time which proved to be the difference.

Clarion travels to Eastern Michigan on Friday night for a 7-m latch, then returns to Tippin Gym on Sunday for a 2pm start against Cleveland State.
