62ND PSAC WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
CLARION’S EDGAR & HORNING WIN INDIVIDUAL PSAC TITLES
Clarion University’s Frank Edgar (141-lbs. Sr. Toms River, N.J.) and Chris Horning (157-lbs. Jr. Syracuse, N.Y.) won individual titles, six Golden Eagle wrestlers were placewinners and the team finished fifth team scoring at the 62nd Annual PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Wrestling championships which concluded on Saturday night.
Hosted by East Stroudsburg University at Koehler Fieldhouse, Bloomsburg took first place honors with 149.5 points, with pre-tournament favorite Edinboro second with 134.5. Host East Stroudsburg finished third with 104.5 points, Lock Haven was fourth with 87 and Clarion ended fifth with 73.5 points. Rounding out the nine team field were Shippensburg in sixth place with 52.5, Millersville seventh with 41.5, Kutztown eighth with 39 and Slippery Rock ninth with 35 points.
Edgar, the #1 seed at 141, defeated Bloomsburg’s Brad Frobes 6-1 in the finals to win his second consecutive title at 141. Posting a 3-0 record, he opened with a pin of SRU’s Tony Monroig at 4:52, and had a 9-4 semifinal win over Matt Fittery of Lock Haven. Edgar raised his season record to 31-6 and now has a Clarion career record of 111-52.
Horning, also a #1 seed, defeated Edinboro’s Matt Hill 6-1 in the finals to take home his first PSAC title. Chris opened the tournament with an injury default win over Kevin Kalbach of Kutztown, then posted an 11-0 major decision over Chris Tate of Bloomsburg in the semi’s. A second place finisher in last year’s tournament, Horning ran his 2005 record to 20-4 and now has a career record of 62-33.
Also placing at the PSAC’s were Marcus Surin (3rd - 165, Sr. Spring Valley, N.Y.), Chris Lape (4th - 133, So. Coraopolis), John Fager (4th - hwt. - Jr. West Jordan, Utah) and Bart Wylie (6th - 149, Fr. Renfrew).
Surin posted a 3-1 record at 165 in earning his third place finish. He opened with a pin at 2:35 over Gerald Christian of SRU, lost a 14-11 decision to Jim Bertulis (Bloomsburg), then bounced back for a 9-6 win over Rory McCoy (Lock Haven) and a 4-2 win over Keith Smith (E. Stroudsburg). Surin has a season record of 21-10.
Lape, a sophomore in his first season at Clarion, was 2-2 in placing fourth at 133. He defeated Lock Haven’s Jimmy Collins 5-2 in the opening round, then lost a 12-4 major decision to Edinboro’s Shawn Bunch. In the wrestle backs he pinned SRU’s John Marsh at 0:49, and lost a 3-2 decision to East Stroudsburg’s Ryan McCallum. Lape has a season record of 12-11.
Fager, a junior in his first season at Clarion, was 3-2 in placing fourth at heavyweight. He lost his opening match to Bloom’s Mike Spaid 8-4, then came back with wins over Jamie Nagel (Millersville) 6-1, Jared Dubbs (Ship) 9-4 and Andrew Freas (Kutztown) 5-1, before losing to Edinboro’s Joe Hennis 4-2. Fager has a season record of 13-13.
Wylie, in his first regular season action in a Clarion singlet, was 1-3 in placing sixth at 149. Wylie lost his opening match by fall at 2:53 to ESU’s Mark Smith and came back for a major decision win over Millersville’s Shawn Blanchard 16-5. He then lost to Bloom’s George Hickman 12-9 and Shipp’s Zack Leathers 18-2. Wylie now has a record of 4-5.
Also participating but going 0-2 in the tournament were Chris Goings (Fr. Centerville, Va.) At 174 and Charlie Cilinski (Jr. Gainseville, Va.) At 197. Goings is now 6-16 and Cilinski 2-14 on the season.
The Golden Eagles did not have an entry at 133 and 184 due to injuries to Toby Seger and Dave Gardner.
CLARION NOTES: With two individual champions, Clarion now has 106 PSAC winners in its wrestling history... Clarion, Bloomsburg, Edinboro and Lock Haven all had two champions, while SR and East Stroudsburg had one each... It was Bloom’s first PSAC title since 1990... Slippery Rock will host the 2006 PSAC Championship.
