(Lawrenceville, New Jersey): #23 ranked Rider University won eight matches and defeated Clarion 31-7 on Saturday afternoon in a dual meet wrestled at Alumni Gymnasium.
With the dual meet starting at 174-pounds, Rider won the first six bouts to jump out to a 25-0 lead.
Rider’s Chris Marold notched a late, third period reversal to defeat Clarion’s Aaron Wright 3-2, then Nick Catone won by technical fall at seven minutes over Marcus Surin 22-4, and Rider’s Jared Terrell decisioned Kyle Cathcart 8-1 at 197 to give the Broncs a 11-0 lead.
Rider heavyweight Carmello Marrero won by forfeit and the "Broncs" led 17-0 as the two teams turned to the lightweights.
(Clarion heavyweight Matt Wilcox suffered a foot injury during his win on Friday night and was unable to wrestle on Saturday, while 197-pounder Charlie Cilinski also suffered an injury against Bloom and was held out on Saturday. The Golden Eagles weighed in double at 174 and moved Marcus Surin up to 184, then moved Kyle Cathcart from 184 to 197 to cover the weight classes).
The Golden Eagles Peter Derstine lost an 11-2 decision to Bobby Stinson and 13th ranked Don Fisch majored Clarion’s Doug Surra 15-5 to gove Rider a 25-0 advantage after six weights.
Eagle co-captain Frank Edgar put Clarion on the board when he majored Rick Bauer at 141 by an 18-5 margin. Edgar led 7-1 after two periods, then used four third period takedowns to provide his decision. Edgar raised his season record to 23-4.
Rider’s Labe Black won 7-1 over T.J. McCance at 149, then the Eagles Chris Horning bounced back for a 10-3 win over Dave Miller. Horning’s reversal to start the second gave him a 6-3 lead, while a third period takdown, stall point and riding time accounted for his win. Horning is now 14-5 on the season.
The match ended with Rider’s Ryan Cunningham rallying in the third period for a 7-5 win over Clarion’s Jeremy Reitz. Reitz escaped to start the third period and led 3-1, but Cunningham had three takedowns in the final stanza to get the win.
Clarion returns to the mat on January 24th when the Eagles host Edinboro at Tippin Gym for a 7:30 match.
