CLARION, PA: Clarion charged out to a 21-3 lead and never looked back as the Golden Eagles defeated Lock Haven 25-18 in an Eastern Wrestling League match.
Clarion finished its dual meet season with a 4-8 overall record and a 2-5 mark in the EWL. Lock Haven is 3-10 overall and 0-6 in the EWL with one match remaining.
With the match starting at 174 Clarion opened a big lead early. Aaron Wright posted an 8-0 major decision over Ryan Summers including a three-point near fall in third period and 5:53 in riding time to raise his season record to 17-11.
LH’s Mike Greenberg Jumped to an 11-2 third period lead, but Clarion’s Marcus Surin countered back with two late takedowns to only lose a 13-6 decision to Greenberg and save a team point.
The Golden Eagles then saw two freshman take charge. Kyle Cathcart, who moved up to 1997, had a 5-0 first period lead when he put Carlos Ponce to his back and pinned him at 1:57.
Clarion came righth back with Matt Wilcox at heavweight and saw him post a 19-3 technical fall over Jim Myers at 3:48. He had two takedowns and five, three-point near falls to earn his victory.
After 125-pounder Peter Derstine won by forfeit, Clarion had a 21-3 lead after 5 weights.
Lock Haven’s Dave Predko pinned Louis Russo at 2:05 at 133-pounds, but Clarion’s #17th ranked 141-pounder Frank Edgar put the dual meet away with an 18-7 major decision over Casey Moore. Edgar had 5 takedowns, two reversals and a three-point near fall to raise his record to 34-5 on the season.
Lock Haven won the final three matches when #10 rated Mike Maney decisioned T.J. McCance 2-0 at 149, Charlie Brenneman won by tie breaking criteria (6-6) over Chris Horning at 157 and Jason Gilligan decisioned Jeremy Reitz 5-2.
Maney had a third period escape and riding time to earn his 28th win against 5 losses. The Horning-Brenneman match had the fans on the edge of their seats. Horning took a 3-0 second period lead with an escape and takedown, but a key Brenneman reversal made it 3-2 entering the third. Brenneman tied the match with a third period escape. In the first tie breaker Horning escaped first. Then Brenneman reversed Horning in his 30-second period, but Horning earned a penalty point for interlocking hands at the buzzer to make it 5-5. In the second 30-second tie break both wrestlers escaped, but Brenneman had 22 seconds of overtime riding time and won by criteria.
Jason Gilligan trailed 1-0 in the third when he reversed Reitz. Reitz escaped to tie the match at 2-2, but Gilligan posted a takedown with 35-seconds left and posted riding time for his win.
Clarion will next be in action at the EWL Tournament which is hosted at Bloomsburg on March 6-7.
