CLARION WRESTLERS HOST #24 EDINBORO SATURDAY/VISIT #17 WVU SUNDAY

Clarion University’s NCAA Division I Wrestling team has a busy weekend coming up as the Golden Eagles host EWL rival Edinboro on Saturday, January 24th and then travels to West Virginia on Sunday in another key EWL matchup.

On Saturday Clarion hosts Edinboro at Waldo S. Tippin Gymasnium with match time set for 7:30pm. Then on Sunday the Eagles meet #17 rated West Virginia at the Coliseum at 1pm.

Both matches can also be heard on WCCR-FM (92.7) and on the internet at www.redzonemedia.com with Rich Herman and former coach Bob Bubb describing the action.

Clarion enters the match with a 2-4 dual meet record under seventh year head coach Ken Nellis. The Golden Eagles opened their dual meet season on December 14th with wins over Pitt-Johnstown 16-15 and Drexel 29-13 and a loss to #14 ranked Ohio State (25-18), while losing a close 19-17 match at Buffalo on January 10th. Last weekend the Eagles lost to Bloomsburg 23-12 and Rider 31-7. Nellis has a seven year dual meet record of 42-55-2.

Clarion will feature a lineup of Peter Derstine (Sr. 22-7; Coral Springs, Fl.) at 125, Doug Surra (Fr. 8-10; Kersey, Pa.) at 133, Frank Edgar (Jr. 23-4; Toms River, N.J.) at 141, T.J. McCance (Fr. 7-8; Butler) at 149, Chris Horning (So. 14-5; Syracuse, N.Y.) at 157, Jeremy Reitz (Sr. 19-9; Brookville) at 165, Aaron Wright (Jr. 12-9; Coudersport) or Marcus Surin (So. 2-3; Spring Valley, N.Y.) at 174, Kyle Cathcart (Fr. 8-10; Clarion) at 184, Charlie Cilinski (So. 2-8; Gainesville,Va.) at 197 and Matt Wilcox (Fr. 6-8; Guys Mills, Pa.) at heavyeight.

Edinboro, ranked #24 in the nation and led by seventh year head coach Tim Flynn, enters the dual meet with a 4-3 overall record and a 1-0 slate in the EWL. The Fighting Scots opened the year with a 2-1 mark at the Avalon Duals defeating Findlay 26-13 and Ohio U. 23-10, while losing to Purdue 18-16. The Scots defeated Cleveland State 24-15, then were 1-2 at the Virginia duals two weeks ago defeating Old Dominion 42-6, while losing to Arizona State 21-16 and Wyoming 23-16.

The Scots lineup will feature Chris Pruden (Fr. 7-9; Pownal, Vt.) at 125, Jacob Gray (Jr. 20-7; Essex Junction, Vt.) at 133, Ron Doppelheuer (So. 19-9; Connellsville) at 141, Deonte Penn (So. 17-9; Solon, Oh.) at 149, Eric Ring (So. 8-7; Glassboro,N.J.) at 157, #3 rated Matt King (Sr. 26-1; Connellsville) at 165, # 7 ranked Nate Yetzer (Jr. 23-3; Mansfield, Oh.) at 174, #17 rated Alex Clemsen (So. 12-2; Moberly, Mo.) at 184, Jim Gibson (Fr. 12-11; Hermitage) at 197 and #20 ranked Joe Hennis (So. 17-9; Mims, Fl.) at heavyweight.

West Virginia, ranked #17 in Division I and led by 26th year head coach Craig Turnbull, has the Mountaineers heading into Sunday with 3-4 dual meet record and a 1-0 mark in the EWL. WVU opened the season with a 22-14 win over Stanford and a 22-15 loss to Missouri, then lost 24-13 to Penn State. After defeating Bloomsburg 32-7, the Mountaineers went to the national duals and lost to Michigan 29-16, defeated Cleveland State 21-16 and lost to Penn 21-18.

WVU’s lineup will likely feature Casey Brewster (Sr. 10-9; Nashville, Tenn.) at 125, #19 Seth Lisa (So. 4-5; Northampton) at 133, #10 rated Joe Clarke (Sr. 20-6; Atlanta, Georgia) at 141, Mike Torriero (Sr. 9-8; Sound Beach, N.Y.) at 149, #8 Matt Lebe (So. 19-6; Jeannette) at 157, Zac Fryling (Fr. 12-6; Lansdale) at 165, Eric Mullen (So. 10-5; Canandaigua, N.Y.) at 174, #1 rated Greg Jones (Jr. 12-0; Slickville) at 184, #15 ranked Matt Daddino (Jr. 12-5; Franklin Square, N.Y.) at 197 and Lanfer Simpson (So. 2-2; Waynesburg) at heavyweight.
