(CLARION, PA): Cleveland State won six of ten matches and held on as the Vikings defeated Clarion 20-14 in an Eastern Wrestling League matchup on Sunday at Clarion’s W.S. Tippin Gymnasium.

Clarion dipped to 3-8 overall and 1-5 in the EWL, while Cleveland State upped its record to 9-8 overall and 3-3 in the EWL.

Cleveland State opened the dual meet with three wins and an 11-0 team lead. Ron Howard led off by defeating Clarion’s Kyle Cathcart 7-2 at 184 pounds, then teammate Joe Phillips won by technical fall 21-5 at 6:04 against Charlie Cilisnki, and #16 ranked heavyweight Russ Davie notched a 13-7 decision over Clarion’s Matt Wilcox, even though Wilcox scored the opening takedown and also notched two reversals in the bout.

The Golden Eagles got on the board when Peter Derstine won an 18-7 major decision over DeAngelo Penn at 125. Derstine trailed 4-1 in the first when he lateral dropped Penn to his back for 5-4 lead. In the second period Dertsine use an escape and a five-point move to take a commanding 11-6 lead. In the third a three-point near fall, followed by a takedown and two-point near fall gave him the win.

CSU’s Mark Bugara won an 11-8 decision in the final seconds over Clarion’s Louis Russo. Russo led 5-2 entering the third when Burgara tied the bout with an escape and takedown. Russo escaped and took Nugara town for an 8-6 lead with about 50-seconds left. Bugara posted a takedown at the 30-second mark to tie, and when Russo got caught in a roll through with 10-seconds left, he yielded a quick two-point near fall and lost 11-8 with 1:00 of riding time.

Anthony Coleman then posted an upset overtime win over Clarion’s #20 ranked Frank Edgar. With no score early in the second period Edgar was called for a caution. When Edgar asked why, he was penalized for usnportsmanlike conduct. Edgar escaped to tie the match 1-1 entering the third. Coleman reversed Edgar with about 30-seconds left, and Edgar reversed back with about 5 seconds to go to tie the score 3-3. Coleman scored a counter takedown with 32-seconds elapsed in the first overtime to gain a 5-3 win.

After Cleveland State’s Matt DePolo 4-3 over T.J. McCance at 149 won with a takedown

with only 30-seconds left to win his bout, the Golden eagles won the final three matches.

Chris Horning raised his season record to 21-7 when he used a second period escape and 1:44 in riding time to defeat Jason Effner 2-1 at 157 pounds.

Senior Jeremy Reitz then posted a 17-1 technical fall at 5:55 against Robert Blank at 165. Reitz used three takedowns, three near falls, and a reversal to pick up his 20th win of the season (20-14).

At 174 Aaron Wright won an exciting 5-4 decision over Matt Kallai in the first tie breaker. Wright used two second period reversals to lead 4-2 entering the third period. Wright was riding in the third when official Mike Millward called Wright for a potentially dangerous hold, then made it an illegal hold and awarded Kallai a penalty point. The Clarion bench disagreed with the call and the Eagles were penalized a team point. Kallai escaped to tie the match 4-4, but Wright won in the tied breaker when he escaped nine seconds in, and Kallai was unable to escape in his 30-second period from the down spot.

Clarion’s three seniors Peter Derstine, Jeremy Reitz and Aaron Wright were honored in pre-match ceremonies. The Golden Eagles return to Tippin Gym on Thursday when the Golden Eagles host Lock Haven in a 7:30pm matchup.
