(CLARION, PA): Clarion jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back as the Golden Eagles defeated Virginia Tech 24-15 in an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet on Saturday afternoon at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium.
Clarion raised its overall record to 3-7 and 1-4 in the EWL, while Virginia Tech dropped to 7-10 overall and finished its EWL slate with a 1-6 mark.
Peter Derstine got the Eagles rolling at 125 with a forfeit win, then teammate Louis Russo decisioned Ron Broughman 11-5 at 133-pounds. Russo used four, first period takedowns to pace his win.
At 141 pounds Clarion’s #20 ranked Frank Edgar pinned the Hokies Aaron Brown at 4:37 to run his season record to 33-4 and boost the Eagle lead to 15-0.
The Eagles also won at 149 and 157 pounds to boost the team lead to 21-0. Freshman T.J. McCance used a third period takedown to defeat Tyde Prater 4-3, then Chris Horning notched a 7-1 decision over Andrew Donofrio. Horning boosted his record to 20-7 on the year and had a first period takedown, a second period reversal, a third period takedown plus riding time to win his match.
Virginia Tech got on the board at 165 when #17 ranked Chris Stith edged Clarion’s Jeremy Reitz 6-4 in overtime. Reitz led early with a first period takedown, but Stith rallied in the third with a takedown of his own to take a 4-3 lead. Reitz escaped with about 3-seconds left and the two went into overtime tied 4-4. Stith posted his winning takedown 18-seconds into the overtime.
Clarion cinched the dual win when Aaron Wright posted a 5-0 win over Steve Borja at 174. Wright had a first period takedown, second period reversal and riding time to win his match.
The Hokies won the final three matches when Shaun Guttridge decisioned Kyle Cathcart 5-2 at 184, Tomas Ovalle had a 9-4 decision over Charlie Cilinski and Kris Wiedegreen took a forfeit win at heavyweight for Virginia Tech.
Clarion hosts Cleveland State on Sunday at 1pm on Senior Day. Three Clarion seniors will be honored in pre-match ceremonies including Derstine (125), Reitz (165) and Wright (174).
