#11 West Virginia Edges Clarion 22-14
(CLARION, PA): 11th Ranked West Virginia used a major decision from defending NCAA Champion Greg Jones at 174 and a pin from Seth Lisa at 125 to defeat a stubborn Clarion squad on Sunday afternoon 22-14 at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium.
The loss puts Clarion at 8-4 overall and 1-2 in the Eastern Wrestling League, while West Virginia goes to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in the EWL.
Clarion posted four wins on the afternoon including an 18-5 major decision by Rad Martinez over Troy Forte at 133, Jeremy Reitz 5-3 overtime decision over Mike Torriero at 157, Eric Mausser’s 12-2 major decision over Adrian Thompson at 197 and heavyweight John Testa’s 6-4 win over Brent Miller.
The Mountaineers gained six victories including a pin by Seth Lisa over Matt Doerfler at 6:25, Shane Cunanan edged Frank Edgar 5-3 at 141, Billy Smith decisioned Jim Perry 12-5 at 149, Tom McMath edged Chris Horning 4-3 at 165, Jones major decisioned Dave Gardner at 174 and Ryan Wilman decisioned Eric Spence 5-0 at 184.
After Lisa’s pin put the Mountaineers in front 6-0, Clarion bounced back when #10 rated Rad Martinez used seven takedowns to defeat Forte 18-5. The win raised Martinez season record to 31-5.
WVU’s Shane Cunanan used a third period takedown to edge Frank Edgar at 141 in what proved to be one of two pivotal matches. After Smith decisioned Clarion’s Perry to give the Mountaineers a 12-4 lead, the Eagles bounced back again.
The Golden Eagles Jeremy Reitz escaped late in the third period to tie his match with Torriero, then took Torriero down with 26 seconds left in overtime to win 5-3 and help the Eagles pull within 12-7.
WVU was counting on 8th rated Tom McMath at 165 and he barely edged Eagles freshman Chris Horning 4-3. Horning posted a first period takedown and McMath a second period takedown to tie the score 3-3 entering the third period. McMath escaped and held off Horning for the 4-3 win.
WVU’s Greg Jones, who is the defending NCAA Champ at 174, used 9 takedowns to post his 19-7 major decision over Dave Gardner. Jones, a sophomore, is 18-0 this season.
Clarion rallied for wins at 197 and heavyweight to close the match. Eric Mausser, ranked #10 at 197, pushed his season record to 27-5 with a 12-2 major decision over Adrian Thompson. Mausser had three takedowns and a three-point near fall to pace his victory.
The heavyweight match saw #6 ranked John Testa and #13 rated Brent Miller battle to the wire. With the score tied 2-2 entering the third period, Miller escaped, but Testa posted a takedown to lead 4-3. After Miller escaped again to tie the score, Testa scored the winning takedown with only 12 seconds left. The win put Testa’s season record at 32-2 and raised his career record to 123-26. He is now one win behind Sheldon Thomas (124-18; 1993-97) and Don Rohn (124-9-2; 1972-76) for sixth place on Clarion’s all-time win list.
The Golden Eagles host Pitt on Tuesday night at 7:30pm, while West Virginia visits Lock Haven on Friday at 7:30.
