CLARION, PA: Clarion 197-pounder Eric Mausser posted a fall and heavyweight John Testa a major decision to help propel Clarion to a 20-17 win over Buffalo on Saturday night in an NCAA Division I wrestling match.

Held at Clarion’s Waldo S. Tippin Gym, Buffalo led the Golden Eagles 17-10 entering 197 pounds when Mausser pinned Buffalo’s Harold Sherrell at 2:44 to bring the Eagles to within one point at 17-16. Eagle heavyweight John Testa then major decisioned Tom Curl 11-3 to give Clarion its 20-17 triumph.

Both Mausser and Testa were honored in pre-match ceremonies for going over the 100 career win mark earlier this season. Mausser, ranked 7^th in the nation at 197, raised his season record to 21-4 and his career record to 109-40.

Testa, who is ranked 9^th in the nation at heavyweight, upped his season record to 25-2 and now has a career mark of 116-26. His 116 wins ties former Clarion great Kurt Angle who posted a record of 116-10-2 on his way to two NCAA titles and eventually an Olympic Gold medal for the United States.

Clarion opened the match with a 10-0 lead after Peter Derstine decisioned Mike Sebaaly 12-6 at 125, Rad Martinez decisioned Mike Trotta 9-4 and Frank Edgar scored a major decision over Adam Grillo 15-4.

Buffalo roared back to score 17 unanswered points and take a 17-10 lead. The Bulls got started at 149 when Dave Edwards won 6-2 over Jim Perry. Then Labe Black edged Jeremy Reitz 2-0 at 157 and Tom Paladino defeated Chris Horning 8-6.

Buffalo took its first lead (13-10) when Gary Cooper notched a 19-5 major decision over Dave Gardner, then upped that to 17-10 when Garrett Bontempo posted a 21-8 major decision over Charlie Cilinski, setting up Clarion’s comeback win.

Clarion upped its season record to 6-2 overall, while Buffalo dropped to 6-2.

The Golden Eagles will host Bloomsburg on Friday, January 17^th at 7:30pm, then hosts Rider on Saturday, January 18^th at 1pm.
