RIDER POSTS 23-15 COMEBACK WIN OVER CLARION

(LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J.): Clarion led 9-0 after two matches and 12-7 halfway through Saturday afternoon’s dual meet, but Rider rallied to win four of the last five matches and defeat the Golden Eagles 23-15 at Alumni Arena.

Clarion dropped to 4-9 overall, while Rider upped its season mark to 3-8. The Golden Eagles, who won 28-13 at Bloomsburg Friday night, saw their two match win streak come to an end.

Clarion juniors Eric Mausser and John Testa got Clarion off to a fast start at 197 and heavyweight. Mausser defeated #18 ranked Greg Sawyer 4-2, posting a first period takedown, earning an escape in the second period, plus securing a riding point with 2:12 in time advantage. Mausser raised his season record to 22-6.

Clarion’s #8 ranked John Testa followed with a strong performance at heavyweight as he pinned Vinny D’Agostino at 5:58. Testa led 17-4 at the time of the fall and ran his season record to 22-5.

Although Clarion held a 9-0 lead, Rider bounced back when Jerold Limongelli defeated Clarion’s Peter Derstine 5-3 at 125, an dteammate Jason Smith notched an 11-2 major decision over Starlin Jimenez at 133.

Clarion’s #6 ranked 133-pounder Rad Martinez moved up to 141 and won a 6-2 decision over John Robinson to give Clarion a 12-7 lead after five weight classes. Martinez, who is now 21-2 overall, had two takedowns, an escape and riding time in posting his win.

After intermission Rider won four of the final five matches to get the win. Clarion Dom Surra lost an 8-3 decision to Nick Harrington at 149, then Jim Perry lost a 10-2 major decision to Derek Jenkins and Rider had its first lead of the day at 14-12.

Eagle 157-pounder Jeremy Reitz was moved up to 165 from his normal position and got caught and pinned at 2:17 by Cory DeBias and Rider led 20-12.

The Eagles answered back when Todd Schuchert defeated highly regarded Nick Catone 9-7 in overtime to put Clarion to within 20-15. Schuchert posted a takedown 24 seconds into overtime to earn his ninth win (9-2 record) of the season.

Rider’‘s Bob Pizzuto decisioned Clarion’s Marcus Surin 5-2 at 184 to secure the win for the Broncs.

Clarion will wrestle in the PSAC Tournament next Friday and Saturday at Kutztown.
