#23 PENN STATE DEFEATS CLARION 26-9
(CLARION, PA.): #23 ranked Penn State won seven of ten matches and defeated Clarion in the Golden Eagles home opener for the 2001-2002 season by a 26-9 margin.
The crowd of 1,500 at Waldo S. Tippin Gym saw the Lions jump out to a 9-0 lead with wins at 174 and 184 respectively, before the Golden Eagles saw #16 ranked Eric Mausser edge Ryan Cummins 1-0 at 197 to narrow the lead to 9-3.
Clarion’s #15 ranked heavyweight John Testa was upset by PSU’s Pat Cummins 6-4. Testa led 2-1 after the first period with a takedown. Cummins tied the match in the second with an escape, then scored a counter takedown for a 4-3 lead. Testa had a third period escape to tie the match at 4-4. Testa took a number of shots in the third period, but Cummins used a counter late in the period and notched a takedown with one-second left in the match for a 6-4 win.
Clarion posted two impressive wins at 133 and 149 for its other victories. Fifth ranked Rad Martinez had three takedowns and 2:37 of riding time in his 8-1 win over #8 ranked Marat Tomaev.
At 149 Clarion’s Dominic Surra upset #20 rated Nate Wachter 3-1. Surra, a senior from Kersey, Pa. and St. Mary’s High, registered a takedown with one second remaining to post his victory.
Franklin, Pa. native Scott Moore, ranked #7 at 141 pounds, led Clarion’s Jared Moss 6-0, but held on in the third period for a 10-7 decision. Moss threw Moore to his back for a four-point move with 45-seconds remaining in the third to narrow the margin to 8-6, but Moore used an escape and riding time to hold off Moss.
Clarion drops to 0-2 on the young season, while Penn State goes to 1-0. The Golden Eagles host the Clarion Duals on Sunday, December 16th with matches against Ohio University at 1pm, #7 Ohio State at 3pm and Kent State at 5pm. Also at the dual will be Lock Haven, Kent State and Pitt-Johnstown.
Penn State travels to Edinboro on Sunday, December 9th for a 1pm matchup
