(CLARION, PA): Clarion posted four individual wins but it was not enough Friday night as 12th ranked Lock Haven defeated the Golden Eagles 25-13 in an NCAA Division I and Eastern Wrestling League dual meet.
Clarion dropped to 2-8 overall and 0-2 in the EWL, while Lock Haven raised its record to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in the EWL.
W.S. Tippin Gymnasium featured a crowd of about 1,750 for the dual meet as Clarion’s wins started at 157 when Jeremy Reitz topped Jason Gilligan 5-3 at 157. Eric Mausser picked up later as he major decisioned Jarred Dressler 8-0 at 197, then John Testa decisioned Tim Boetsch 9-3 at heavyweight. Clarion’s final win came at 133 when Rad Martinez decisioned Victor Jackson 3-2.
Lock Haven got the ball rolling in the first match of the night as #2 ranked JaMarr Billman pinned Clarion’s Dom Surra at 4:03 for a 6-0 lead.
Clarion countered with a Reitz 3-1 win. The match paired two former teammates at nearby Brookville High School. Reitz used a first period takedown and a third period escape to record his win.
Lock Haven used decisions at 165 and 174, plus a major at 184 to take a 16-3 lead. Clarion’s Todd Schuchert led 2-1 after the first period at 174. He fell behind Lock Haven’s Ed Pawlak 7-4 in the third, when a Schuchert takedown narrowed the margin to 7-6 with about 30-seconds remaining. Pawlak’s escape and counter takedown in the final seconds secured a big win for the Bald Eagle.
Clarion’s Mausser used two takedowns, a three-point near fall and riding time to post his 8-0 win. The victory moved Mausser to 19-6 overall this season.
Then Testa followed with three takedowns to pace the #9 ranked heavyweight in Division I to a 9-3 win over Boetsch. Testa’s record is now 19-5.
Clarion narrowed the dual meet to 16-10 setting up an entertaining match at 125. Clarion’s Peter Derstine and #18 ranked Trap McCormack of Lock Haven traded moves for nearly three periods. McCormack led 2-1 (by virtue of a first period penalty point), when he notched a late, third period takedown to win 4-1.
Clarion’s #8 ranked Rad Martinez used a third period escape and a double leg takedown to defeat Victor Jackson. Martinez raised his season record to 18-2.
Lock Haven’s Mike Maney, ranked #5, pinned Stephen Stremple at 1:43 to give Lock Haven its final points and a 25-13 win.
