(CLARION, PA.): Edinboro’s Corey Ace pinned Clarion 125-pounder Peter Derstine in the final bout at 133 and led the Scots to a 23-15 win over Clarion.
Held at Clarion’s Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium, the Golden Eagles moved out to a 6-0 lead in the first two bouts with wins by Rad Martinez and Dom Surra. Martinez, ranked #7 in the country at 133, moved up to 141 and defeated Edinboro’s Charlie Soto 8-2. Martinez upped his record to 24-3.
Surra then decisioned Edinboro’s Chad Caros, who is normally a 141-pounder but moved up to cover the Scots at 149. Caros, ranked 12th in the nation at 141, scored the opening two takedowns, but Surra roared back with three takedowns in the final two periods and notched an 11-5 win, giving Clarion a 6-0 lead.
The Scots then won five straight bouts to take a 17-6 lead. Ryan Yates decisioned Jeremy Reitz 4-1, Nate Yetzer decisioned Jim Perry 11-4, Matt R. King major decisioned Todd Schuchert 12-3 to give the Scots a 10-6 lead. Josh Koscheck, the defending NCAA Champion at 174, moved up to 184 and scored a major decision over Marcus Surin 10-1, while teammaqte David Shunamon, ranked #9 at 197, decisioned Clarion’s Eric Mausser 3-1 with a takedown with only 10-seconds left in the match. Shunamon’s win avenged a 4-3 loss to Mausser in the PSAC finals a week ago.
Clarion’s John Testa notched a 12-8 decision over Reuben Daniels to bring Clarion to within 17-9. Testa, ranked #8 in the nation, upped his season record to 26-5.
The Eagles put Starlin Jimenez on the mat to accept Edinboro’s forfeit at 125 and the Eagles drew within 17-15 setting the stage for Ace’s pin.
Clarion dropped to 4-10 overall and 1-3 in the EWL. Edinboro raised its record to 8-3 and 4-1 in the EWL. Clarion is off until Feb. 12th when the Eagles travel to Pitt for a 7:30 matchup.
