CLARION STARTS SEASON WITH 76-58 WIN OVER DAVIS & ELKINS

Sophomore Sara Pratt recorded her first career double-double to help the Clarion University women’s basketball team to a 76-58 win over visiting Davis & Elkins in the Clarion Classic Friday night at Clarion’s Tippin Gym.

 

Pratt had career highs in points (16) and rebounds (12) and was one of five Golden Eagles in double digits. Katrina Greer led Clarion (1-0) with 21 points including three 3-points, while Ashley Grimm had 12 points and eight assists. With the eight helpers, Grimm became the third player in school history with 400 career assists and ended the night with 406 career helpers. Janelle Zabresky chipped in 10 points and six rebounds, and Rachael Franklin had 10 points off the bench for Clarion, who was playing without injured starter Jessica Albanese and key reserve Bethany Koch.

 

Courtney Pawlak paced Davis & Elkins (0-1) with 20 points and eight rebounds while going 10-for-10 from the free-throw line. Allison Bruce had 13 points and six boards off the bench for the Senators.

 

Clarion used a 10-0 run at the end of the first half to build a 34-24 halftime lead and then outscored Davis & Elkins 42-34 in the second half.

 

Both teams return to action Saturday in the Clarion Classic. Davis & Elkins will take on Slippery Rock at 4 p.m. with Clarion hosting Pitt-Johnstown at 6 p.m.
