CLARION FALLS 71-65 AT ASHLAND

ASHLAND, OHIO – Ashland used an 16-5 run midway through the second half to erase a 6-point deficit and get a 71-65 win over Clarion in a non-conference game at Ashland Tuesday night.

The Golden Eagles (1-2) led 44-38 following a layup by April Gratton with 14:21 to play, but Clarion scored just one basket in the next over the next eight minutes allowing Ashland to take a 54-49 lead on a layup by Catherine Portyrata.

Clarion was able to cut the lead to one twice – the last time on a bucket by Katrina Greer with 3:27 left – but Ashland was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final 2:32 to seal the win.

My’Kea Cohill led Clarion with a season-high 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting including 1-for-1 from 3-point land. She also was 4-for-6 from the free-throw line. Cohill added two assists and two steals

Jessica Albanese chipped in with 13 points, four rebounds and three steals, while Ashley Grimm had 10 points, three assists, two steals and two rebounds. Freshman Sara Pratt led Clarion on the boards with seven rebounds while adding four points.

Portyrata had a double-double (21 points, 16 rebounds) to pace Ashland, while Alethea Lamerson added 17 points and four assists and Lacy Romine 11 points and six helpers.

Clarion, which led 39-34 at halftime, shot 46.4 percent (26 of 56) in the game, while Ashland was 48.1 percent (25 of 52 shooting). Ashland had the advantage at the foul line connecting on 18 of 21 shots while Clarion was 11 of 15. The Golden Eagles were also outrebounded 35-29.

Clarion is now off until Dec. 2 when it travels to Mansfield for a 1 p.m. game that can be heard of WCUC, 91.7 FM and www.redzonemedia.com.
