FERRIS STATE TOPS CLARION TO WIN CLARION CLASSIC

            CLARION – Ferris State used sizzling shooting in the first half to build a 15-point halftime lead on its way to a 73-57 win over Clarion in the championship game of the Clarion Classic Saturday night at Tippin Gym.

            The Bulldogs (2-0) shot 67.9 percent in the first half while using runs of 11-1 (to start the game) and 11-0 to build a 45-30 halftime lead. Ferris then went on a second 11-0 run in the second half to put the game away.

            Jessica Albanese led Clarion with 18 points, the lone Golden Eagle in double figures.

            Ferris State had three players reach double digits paced by Erin Miller with 24 points and tournament MVP Kristin Reinhart with 20. Rachel Folcik chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds.

            Clarion had three players with seven points each – Katrina Greer, April Gratton and Sara Pratt. Ashley Grimm added two points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Golden Eagles, while Katie Stover had six rebounds and two points and Janelle Zabresky four points, two blocks, two steals and five boards.

            Clarion returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Ashland for a 7 p.m. game.

WEST VIRGINIA STATE 74, GEORGIAN COURT 53

West Virginia State used a 23-7 run right after halftime to pull away from Georgian Court 74-53 in the Clarion Classic Consolation Game Saturday afternoon at Tippin Gym.

            The Yellow Jackets (1-1) led by 11 (31-20) at halftime and by nine points early in the second half before pulling away.

            Randi Cary led West Virginia State with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Danielle Davis added 10 points. LaSha’ Anderson chipped in with nine points, and Shandi White had eight points and seven rebounds.

            Melinda Hunold had 11 points and eight rebounds for Georgian Court, while Stephanie Longdo added 11 points and six assists. Ashley Lobbato had four points and 11 rebounds.
