CLARION WOMEN FORCED 33 TURNOVERS IN SEASON OPENING WIN OVER GEORGIAN COURT

CLARION – The Clarion University women’s basketball team scored 37 points off of 33 Georgian Court turnovers on its way to a season opening 70-43 win over the Lions in the second game of the Clarion Classic Friday night at Tippin Gym.

 

With the win, Clarion will play Ferris State, an 85-70 winner over West Virginia State, at 6 p.m. Saturday at Tippin Gym in the Clarion Classic Championship game. Georgian Court will meet WV State in the consolation game at 4 p.m. in Tippin.

 

Against Georgian Court, the Golden Eagles (1-0) scored nine of the game’s first 11 points and never looked back building a 34-12 halftime lead. The 12 points were the fewest allowed in the first half by Clarion since Jan. 11, 2003, when the Eagles led at Cheyney 28-12 at the break on their way to a 63-45 win.

 

In the win, junior point guard Ashley Grimm moved past Carlita Jones into fifth place all-time in school history in assists. Grimm, who had six helpers in the game, now has 267, two more than Jones. Grimm sits 19 assists back of Shannon Coakley for fourth in school history.

 

Sophomore Katrina Greer led a balanced scoring attack for Clarion with 13 points, while My’Kea Cohill added 12 points, three assists and five steals. Jessica Albanese had nine points, eight rebounds and eight steals, while freshman Bethany Koch added eight points and six rebounds. Red-shirt freshman Janelle Zabresky led the way on the boards with 10 rebounds while adding seven points.

 

Ashley Lobbato paced Georgian Court with 11 points, while Melinda Hunold had 10 points and eight rebounds.

 

FERRIS STATE 85, WEST VIRGINIA STATE 70

In the first game of the Clarion Classic, Ferris State used an 18-8 second half run to pull away for an 85-70 win over West Virginia State.

 

The Bulldogs led by three points, 36-33, at halftime and by five points – 59-54 – midway through the second half before going on the run.

 

Kristin Reinhardt led four Ferris State players in double digits with 22 points. Erin Miller added 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists, while Rachel Folcik had 16 points and seven rebounds. Sam Johns chipped in with 10 points.

 

Danielle Davis led West Virginia State with 17 points off the bench, while Shandi White added 16 points. Ashlee Stevens had 14 points and LaSha’ Anderson 13.
