IUP HOLDS OFF CLARION 70-67

CLARION – Jahzinga Tracey scored two baskets in a span of 19 seconds in the final 1:30 to lift IUP to a 70-67 win over Clarion in PSAC-West women’s basketball action Wednesday night at Tippin Gym.

Clarion (6-10 overall, 1-1 PSAC-West) trailed 65-59 with 3:32 to play, but baskets by Katrina Greer, Bethany Koch and My’Kea Cohill tied the game at 65 with 1:50 to play.

Enter Tracey, who scored a game-high 19 points for IUP (11-5, 1-0). First the sophomore hit a pull-up jumper in the lane too give IUP a 67-65 lead with 1:29 to play. She then hit another jumper 19 seconds later to make it a 4-point game at 69-65.

Clarion responded with a Jessica Albanese jumper with 21.2 seconds left, and then the Golden Eagles had a chance to tie the game after IUP’s Katie Glaws made only one of two free throws with 7.6 left to make it 70-67.

The Golden Eagles pushed the ball up the court and called time-out just seconds before Cohill nailed a 3-pointer that would have tied the game. The shot clearly came after the time-out was granted.

With 2.9 seconds left, Clarion inbounded the ball to Albanese who handed it off to Greer. But Greer’s desperation 3-pointer from near halfcourt was short allowing IUP to hang on for the win.

Cohill and Greer each scored 17 to lead Clarion with Greer also hauling in a career-high 12 rebounds for her first career double-double. Albanese chipped in with 16 points and nine boards while Grimm had five points and five assists.

Glaws added 17 points for IUP, while Staci Heberling had 10 points on 5 of 7 shooting.
