GOLDEN EAGLES UPSET CALIFORNIA

CLARION – Clarion, which was picked to finish seventh in the PSAC-West in the preseason, upset preseason PSAC-West favorite California 69-58 in the PSAC-West opener for both teams Wednesday night at Tippin Gym.

The Golden Eagles (5-8 overall, 1-0 PSAC-West) used a 17-6 second half run to erase a 1-point deficit with eight minutes to play and get the win.

Katrina Greer led Clarion with 18 points while shooting 5 of 9 from the floor and 8 of 11 from the free-throw line. April Gratton added 17 points and four rebounds while Ashley Grimm had 14 points, five rebounds and six assists.

Kim Nowakowski led California with 24 points and 11 rebounds but she was held without a field goal in the final 14:33 and without a point in the last 11:07.

Cal led 49-48 following an April Smith lay-up with 8:00 to play, but Greer’s lay-up with 7:48 left gave Clarion the lead for good.

            Clarion trailed by 11 – 21-10 – early but used a 9-0 first-half ending run to take a 29-27 halftime lead.

The win was Clarion’s first over Cal since Jan. 29, 2005, when it beat Cal 71-59 at Tippin Gym. It was only the Golden Eagles third win over California in the last 23 meetings.

Clarion returns to action Saturday at Millersville (1 p.m.) and Sunday at West Chester (1 p.m.) before returning to Tippin and PSAC-West vs. IUP (6 p.m.)
