GOLDEN EAGLES FALL TO CONCORD TO START THE NEW YEAR
FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The start of 2007 didn’t treat the Clarion women’s basketball team very well, as the Golden Eagles lost 73-63 to Concord in the opening round of the Fairmont State New Year’s Classic Tuesday in Fairmont, W. Va.
Concord (6-2) used a 19-4 run that spanned the final 5:34 of the first half and the first 4:38 of the second half to build a 19-point lead (50-31), and Clarion never got closer than 10 points – and that on the final two points of the game.
Clarion led early 13-7 before Concord used a 14-2 run to take a 21-15 lead.
The Golden Eagles were able to get back to within four points – 31-27 – on a Katrina Greer jumper with 5:54 left in the first half, but those were the last points of the half for Clarion.
Then after scoring the first two points of the second half, Clarion watched Concord roll off nine of the next 11 to take the 50-31 lead.
Greer led Clarion with a season-high 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Jessica Albanese added 15 tallies, the fifth time this season she has scored at least 15 points. My’Kea Cohill chipped in with 11 tallies.
Concord was led by two 20-point scorers. Samm Nester had 21 points and seven rebounds on 8 of 14 shooting, while Becca Flanagan added 20 points and five rebounds.
Concord was hot from the floor in the first half shooting 54.8 pecent (17 of 31) while building a 41-27 halftime lead. Clarion shot just 35.7 percent (10 of 28) in the opening 20 minutes.
The Golden Eagles return to action Wednesday when they play host Fairmont State at 3 p.m. Clarion then returns home for PSAC Crossover action over the weekend. East Stroudsburg will be at Tippin Gym at 1 p.m. Saturday followed by Kutztown at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Golden Eagles open PSAC-West play against defending PSAC-West and PSAC Champion California at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Tippin Gym.
