IUP’s season is over

CLARION CLINCHED NO. 2 SEED IN PLAYOFFS

Clarion’s win at Edinboro Wednesday clinched the No. 2 seed from the PSAC-West in the PSAC Playoffs for the Golden Eagles … Clarion will host Shippensburg at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the first round … It will be the Golden Eagles first home playoff game since a 79-75 semifinal loss to Bloomsburg in 1992 … Going into today Clarion still has an outside shot at being co-PSAC-West champions … If California loses to Lock Haven and Clarion beats IUP the Golden Eagles would be co-champs.

CIGICH HAS RAISED PLAY IN PSAC-WEST ACTION

Senior forward Heather Cigich has stepped up her play in PSAC-West action averaging 18.6 ppg and 10.5 rpg while shooting 59.8 percent from the field … She also has 36 assists and 27 steals in division play … In her last seven games she is averaging 19.6 ppg and 12.0 rpg while dishing out 23 assists and coming up with 15 steals and shooting 61.9 percent from the field … Cigich ranks second in Clarion history and seventh in PSAC history in rebounding (1,093). She is also fourth in Clarion history in scoring (1,768), eighth in assists (236), fifth in steals (239) and third in blocks (81).

MELTON, GRIMM SETTING UP THE OFFENSE

Clarion has two guards with over 100 assists this season … Junior Melba Melton has 127, which is the fourth most in a season at Clarion, while freshman Ashley Grimm has added 106 … Melton needs four assists to move into a tie for third all-time, while Grimm needs eight to move into the top eight in school history.

CLARION RANKED SIXTH IN EAST REGION

Clarion is ranked sixth in the latest NCAA D-II East Region poll.

RECENT CLARION-IUP SERIES HISTORY

Clarion has won two straight from IUP fro the first time since winning three in a row from 1996-97 … The Eagles are looking for their first season sweep of the Indians since 1997 … Prior to Clarion’s recent success, IUP had won 10 of 13 … Clarion broke a 3-game losing streak to IUP with a 54-39 win at Tippin Gym last February  … IUP had won the first meeting between the teams a year ago 83-65 in Indiana … Clarion won 11 of 14 from IUP from 1991-97 … Clarion head coach Gie Parsons is 16-15 at Clarion vs. IUP … IUP head coach Justin English, who was a GA at Clarion is 1-2 against the Golden Eagles … The 4-point game this season was unusual in the fact that it was only the 4th time in the last 20 games that the teams have been  separated by five points or less
