GOLDEN EAGLES TO HOST IUP ON SENIOR NIGHT
It will be senior night Saturday when Clarion University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams host IUP in key PSAC-West match-ups. The women’s game starts at 6 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 8 p.m.
Clarion’s women’s team enters the game 11-12 overall and 5-5 in the PSAC-West, while IUP is 11-12, 3-6. The Golden Eagles can clinch a PSAC playoff berth with a win and an Edinboro loss to Shippensburg.
The Golden Eagles will be honoring two seniors before the game: Christian Lantz and Tiffany Taylor, who have both played two season for Clarion.
Lantz has scored 729 career points and has grabbed 374 career rebounds in her two season with Clarion, while Taylor has scored 402 career point and dished out 148 career assists. This season Lantz is averaging a team-leading 17.2 ppg to go along with 7.6 rpg, while Taylor is chipping in with 10.0 ppg and 3.9 apg.
Clarion’s men’s team will go into the game with a 13-9 overall mark and a 6-4 PSAC-West record, while IUP is 20-3, 7-2. A Clarion win and a Lock Haven loss to California will clinch the Golden Eagles’ sixth straight PSAC Playoff berth.
The Golden Eagles will be honoring five seniors before the game: James Bigler, Steve Serwatka, David Shearer, Allen Stevens and Dale Thomas.
Shearer, Stevens and Bigler have been key members of the Clarion’s run of success the past four seasons helping the Golden Eagles to a 71-34 (.676) record in the four years that includes one PSAC Title (2001), one NCAA Division II Playoff appearance (2001), one 20-win season (2000), one PSAC-West title (2000) and three straight PSAC Playoff appearances.
Shearer is 13th in school history in scoring with 1,213 points and seventh in rebounding with 771 boards. He is averaging 9.2 ppg and 7.6 rpg this season.
Stevens is 17th in school history in scoring with 1,145 points and 20th in rebounding with 498. This year he is scoring 14.7 ppg while adding 5.7 rpg.
Bigler has been a valuable roll player for Clarion and has scored 137 career points while hitting 50 percent of his three-pointers (40 of 80).
Serwatka, while only playing two years for the Golden Eagles, will finishing his career in the top 25 in scoring and could become the first two-year player in school history to score 1,000 career points. He has scored 976 points through Feb. 13. He is Clarion’s leading scorer this season averaging 17.8 ppg.
Thomas is in his first year with the Golden Eagles and has been a valuable force inside averaging 10.4 ppg and 7.0 ppg. A graduate student, he is a transfer from Middle Tennessee State where he was a three-year starter.
